Description
March 15, 1949. s. CLAPP 2,464,672
. 1 v V M This invention relates to drainage bottl holders for invalid beds. f Y
After certain operations and during {certain diseases it is necessary to provide drainage for the site of the operation or location of the trauma produced by the disease. The present methodin such cases, is to tie a bottle to the side rail of the bed whereon the patient is lying. This tying is don by the nurse and usually with a strip of gauze bandage or the like. When the drainage has filled the bottle it is of course necessary to remove it and replace by an empty bottle. It frequently happens that the tying, which must be readily untied, becomes loose and the bottle falls thereby spilling the drainage on the floor.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel device adapted to be applied to the side rail of an invalid bed and to hold a drainage bottle in convenient position by readily releasable means.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the drainage bottle may be positioned at any desired place along a bed rail.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the drainage bottle may be either swung under the bed when in use or swung out from the bed for removal and replacement at the proper times;
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the invention showing the same applied to a bed rail.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section of a modification of the device on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In the construction of the invention as herein shown there is provided a vertical rod I preferable of circular cross section. At its upper end this rod is extended at right angles as indicated at H and is then bent downwardly as at I2 and backwardly toward the body of the rod as at I3. The distance between the downwardly bent portions I2 and the body III of the rod is that equal to the horizontal leg of a bed rail shown in broken lines at I4. On the body In of the rod is a collar I of segmento-cylindrical form, the collar hav- 2 Claims. (01. 538 -226) inga flat face I5 flush with the surface of the rod I'D. From the lower part of this collar extends,
an arm I1 and from the outer end of this arm there extends upwardly a gripping member I8.
, By reason of the narrow neck IT a certain amount of spring is permitted to the upwardly extending member I 8. The vertical member of the bed rail 14 is engaged between the rod body In and this member I8, the neck I! being of such length as to make this a tight engagement. A thumb screw I'9 extends through one side of the collar I5 and engages the rod It! so as to hold the collar in adjusted position.
The rod II] is of proper length to extend well below the bed, rail I4 and at its lower end has a reduced portion 20 on the lower extremity of which is screwed a nut 2|. On the reduced portion 20 is revolubly mounted a collar 22 from which extends an arm 23 having at its free end an arcuate jaw 24. Between the collar 22 and the jaw 24 the arm 23 is provided with a pair of ears 25. Between the ears 25 fits an ear 25 which projects from an arm 2! having a cooperating jaw 28 likewise of arcuate form. A pivot pin 29 passes through the cars 25 and 26 and thus pivots the arms 21 and 23 together. The arm 21 is shorter than the arm 23 and has at its rear end a flattened finger grip 30 opposite which, on the arm 23 is a flattened finger grip 3 I. Between the arms 23 and 21 is a coil compression spring 32 held on spring seats or lugs 33 and urging the jaws 24 and 28 toward each other.
In the use of the invention the upper parts are engaged on the bed rail as shown in Fig. 1. The finger grips 30 and 3| are pressed toward each other and a bottle inserted between the jaws 24 and 28 so that its neck may be gripped by these jaws when pressure on the finger grips is released. Now as shown in Fig. l the position of the bottle will be spaced outside of the bed rail but after the bottle is engaged it may be swung in so that it will not be in the way of a nurse or other attendant in moving around the bed. Obviously the bottle may be readily released by simpl again pressing on the finger grips 30 and 3 I.
It will be obvious also that the arrangement for hinging the jaws together may be varied at will.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 provision is made by a rubber sleeve 34 for the better gripping of the bottle neck.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In a bottle holder for hospital beds, said beds having an angle side rail including a vertical and a horizontal leg, a vertical rod arranged to extend down along and in contact with said vertical leg, an integral arm extending laterally from the top of said rod and provided with a downwardly and backwardly rebent hook end for gripping the edge of said horizontal leg, a sleeve mounted on the rod for vertical sliding movement therealong, a finger extending upwardly from the sleeve in spaced parallel relation to said rod whereby to engage said vertical leg at the side opposite that engaged by the rod, a thumb screw carried by the sleeve for clamping said sleeve in adjusted position on said rod, and a bottle clamp swingingly mounted on the lower end of said rod.
2. In a bottle holder for hospital beds, said beds having an angle side rail including a Vertical and a horizontal leg, a vertical rod arranged to extend down along and in contact with said vertical leg, an integral arm extending laterally from the top of said rod and provided with a downwardly and backwardly rebent hook end for whereby to engage said vertical leg at the side opposite that engaged by the rod, a thumb screw carried by the sleeve for clamping said sleeve in adjusted position on said rod, said rod having a reduced lower end threaded to receive a nut, a. swinging bottle clamp mounted on said reduced lower end, and a nut screwed on said lower end below the bottle clamp and serving when tightened to restrain the clamp from swinging movement.
