1 Claim.
The present invention relates to elimination and irrigation equipment and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a device for use by colostomy patients which will provide them with means whereby successful and. proper elimination of waste body material may be had. The device is so constructed that it may be utilized with a conventional commode, with an especially provided; bed pan or as a compact unit. It consists, essentially of a funnel-like, member, one side of which is adapted to be held firmly against the body of the patient and the other side of which is provided with an extended apron which is normally spaced from the patients body so that he may be free to insert irrigation equipment therethrough to the colostomy. The neck of the funnel-like member may empty directly into a commode or may be connected by extension tubing which is provided as a part of the invention to an especially constructed receiving chamber. Again, the neck may be placed within a bed pan forming a part ofthe invention and which possesses in itself several novel features.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction and operation and yet effective and emcient in use.
Another object of the invention i the provision of a device of the character set forth in which the use of a patients hands is unnecessary for holding the device in proper operative position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the character set forth, the
use of which will allow a colostomy patient to completely relax, both mentally and physically during the self-administration of an enema.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a funnel-like member having a body engaging portion and an apron portion.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for coupling the funnel-shaped member to a novel portable receiving apparatus forming a part of the invention.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a novel bed pan forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which Figure l is an elevational view of an embodiment of the invention,

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 33 of Figure 2, v
Figure 4 is a side elevational view, partly fragmentary, of a modified form the invention may take, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary elevational view of an element of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a, funnel-like member generally designated at It and having an angularly extending body engaging portion II and a substantially vertically extending apron portion l2. There is also provided a neck l3.
The upper edges of the funnel-like member 10 are provided with a continuous bead l4 and the upper edges of the body engaging portion II are provided with relatively high sides I5 and I5 and a depressed center IS. The upper edge of the portion l 2 is relatively higher than the upper edges of the portion I I, and the side or end I5 is relatively higher than the side I 5.
A bed pan I8 of elongated contour is provided at one end with a handle it and with a handle 20 upon one side thereof adjacent the other end of thesame. That end of the pan provided with the handle I9 is relatively higher than the other end of the pan which is provided with an integrally formed lip 2|, and one side of the pan is inwardly rounded, as indicated at 22.
In Figure 4 there is shown a special portable container 23 preferably formed of glass and provided with a screw cap 24 having a centrally upwardly extending pipe 25 and in Figure 5 there is shown an angular extension 26 for the neck I3.
In operation, it will be apparent that if the device is to be used in conjunction with a conventional commode that the funnel-like member I0 is used alone. In any event the portion I l is placed beneath the colostomy and firmly and snugly against the abdomen of the user in the manner disclosed in Figure 3. Because of the angular disposition of the portion H the apron I2 will be spaced from the body of the user and, because of its relatively high upper edge II, it will allow the insertion of a catheter into the patients colostomy. Again, since the edges l5 and I6 are engaged with the abdomen of the user, the neck I3 will extend downwardly into the commode and it will be unnecessary for the patient to utilize either or both of his hands to hold the same in this position thus leaving him free to administer the irrigation. i
In the case of a bed patient the funnel will be used with the bed pan IS, in the manner shown in Figure 3. The rounded indentation 22 extending along one side of the bed pan l8 will allow the patient a closer approach to the effective portions of the apparatus and the pan I8 will be so placed that its deeper end will compensate for the lowering of the bed upon which the patient rests due to the depression thereof on account of the weight of the patient. The lip 2| is provided for emptying the pan I8 in a neat manner.
The extension 26 may be locked upon the neck 13 by means of the bayonet type lock joint when the patient is using the conventional commode and will direct the matter passing therethrough against the wall of the commode thereby preventing splattering and splashing to the discomfort of the patient. The device also helps to keep the commode in a clean condition.
When the device is utilized with the container 23, the neck l3 may be locked with the pipe 25 by means of the bayonet type joint shown and the patient may utilize an ordinary chair in such 20 case when administering an enema. If need be to secure proper height for the funnel-like memliptical shape in plan, one end of the ellipse being substantially higher than the opposite end and one side edge of the ellipse being substantially lower than the other side edge and lower than said opposite end, said lower edge adapted to be held against and follow the contour of the body of the user in the region of the colostomy opening with said other side edge and ends of the receptacle serving as a shield, and a discharge spout connected to the base of said receptacle.
