To all whom it may concern. 1: 5
Be it knownthat I, Dannie Hears; a c'itizen of the United-States,"residing 1n'- Ho'- 'bOkemcounty'of Hudson; and State of New -More particularly itis the"object"of my: invention to provide a bed-pan which canb'e shifted or removed from under the user without liability to a slopping over of the contents so as to wet the person of the user or the bed clothing.
A further object of my invention is to provide a bed-pan which, while having only the usual area of base and the usual area of supporting surface for the buttocks and thighs, and while being sufliciently low to be readily slipped under the person of the user, will still have a very large cubic capacity.
A most important object of my invention is to provide a bed-pan which shall combine with all the usual good features of bed-pans, a much greater stability.
My improved bed-pan is so constructed that it is practically impossible to upset it accidentally. In bed-pans of the prior art the usual construction has embodied a lower body or containing portion having a broad upwardly and outwardly flared flange united to the upper edge of said body portion at its front and sides for the support of the thighs and buttocks. The side walls of the pan proper have usually been vertical or substantially vertical, and have extended directly downward from the inner contour line of the flange. As a consequence, any attempt on the part of the user to shift his position when using the bed-pan has resulted in an excess pressure on the overhanging flange, at one side or the other, and the upsetting of the pan. In my improved bed-pan the two side walls and the front end wall of the body portion are flared outwardly and downwardly away from the inner contour line of the flange to a base, of
substantially the same size and contour as said flange, which is positioned immediately below the same. In this way, any excessive 'f'pre'ssure on one side orxthe'other' ofthe overhanging support is comparatively: ineffective to tip' the pan and spillits contentsxz; v- My invention will be better understood b 3 referrin WhICh f'T' Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved bed-pan; Fig.2 {represents a' side elevation thereof; Fig.3 represents an end I elevation taken from the front-end- (left) of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 represents a view of' Fig. 1, taken from below; Figs. 5, 6 and 7 represent cross sections taken respectively along the lines 5-5, 6-6 and 77 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings the bed-pan comprises a main body or receptacle portion a, having an oval base 6, and a thigh and buttock supporting portion 7) which flares upwardly and outwardly from the rim of the body portion except for a small portion at the rear end 0 thereof. The flared support I) is of a substantial width at the front end (Z and also at the sides of the body portion of the pan, the width decreasing toward the rear until its outer contour finally merges with the outer contour of the body portion wall near the rearend. The angle of flare is so determined throughout that the support will conform to the thighs and buttocks so as to insure a maximum of comfort to the user.
The body portion is, as usual, substantially lower at its front end than at its rear, as is also the bed-pan, taken as a whole, thus permitting the ready insertion and removal of the pan under and from under the user. The rear end 0 of the pan slopes downwardly and inwardly but the sides and front end d of the body portion are flared downwardly and outwardly throughout that portion of the periphery of the pan corresponding to the flared support so as to unite with the oval base 6. The outer edge of this base, except for the portion in the immediate vicinity of the rear end of the pan, has a contour substantially the same as the outer contour of the flared support and lies just within the vertical projection of such latter contour.
As a consequence of the construction above described, any downward pressure upon any portion of the flared thigh and buttock support is exerted upon points which either lie entirely within the margin of the base or so near to said margin that any tendency to tip the bed-pan as a whole is substantially abg to the accompanying drawings v V a. v
