UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BRAINERD TAYLOR, NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO FRANCIS A. RICHARDSON, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
\ URINAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,419, dated ApriI 22, 19Q2.
Application filed July 18, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRAINERD TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Urinals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in improvements in sick-room urinals which render the same es pecially convenient for use by female patients.
In the drawings hereto annexed, which illustrate an embodiment of myinvention, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a front'elevation.
The urinal, which is preferably composed of a single piece of porcelain, hard rubber, or enameled metal, is provided with the usual body E, which is of sufficient capacity to receive and retain urine passed by the patient. The bottom e of the urinal is flat and spreads out laterally into wings c, which give the stability required for convenience. The sides D slope upward from the wings c and are so shaped to give support to the thighs of the patient. The hood 0, which covers and incloses the inside of the body E, is sufficiently narrow to enter easily and comfortably between the legs of the patient and is high enough to protect the overlying bedclothes. The lower lip A projects forward from the body of the urinal, its sides a being drawn inward from the sloping surfaces D. The point of the lower lip A is adapted to enter the vagina of the patient and prevents urine from escaping downward to the bed. of accident if any urine passesoutside the lip A the flange B is provided. This flange is quite thin and .flat, so that it offers no im- In case Serial No. 68,815. (No model.)
pediment to the proper placing of the urinal, 40
A handle His provided wherewith to place and to remove the urinal. 7
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sick-room urinal, comprising a receptacle for urine, a pointed lower lip, and a projecting flange shaped and adapted to come in contact with the buttocks of the user below the said lip, substantially as described.
2. A sick-room urinal, comprisingareceptacle for urine, a pointed lower lip, and a projecting flange below the said lip provided with a gutter, substantially as described.
3. A sick-room urinal, comprising a receptacle for urine provided with upwardly-sloping sides, a lower lip drawn inward and forward from the said sloping sides, and coming to a point in front and a projecting flange shaped and adapted to come in contact with the buttocks of the user below the said lip, substantially as described.
Signed by me at New York city this 10th day of July, 1901.
BRAINERD TAYLOR. Witnesses:
