ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1912 Application filed June 3, 1912. "Serial no. 701,133.
table to the bed and so construct the same that the table may be adjusted to any position desired in accordance to the use to which it is put. I
A further object is to provide an improved clamp. which may be quickly operated to clamp the side angle of an ordinary metal bed, and securely hold the table in position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating my improvements securedto the angle side bar of a bed. Fig. 2, is a fragmentary plan view of the table. Fig. 3, s a view in longitudinal section through the clamp, and Fig. 4-, is a view in longitudinal section on an enlarged scale through the upper end of the table supporting tube illustrating its connection with the table.
1, represents the side angle bar of an ordinary metal bed. To this angle bar 1, my improved clamp is adapted to be secured, and comprises two members 2 and 3. These members 2 and 3 both consist of relatively heavy metal strips, the member 2 bent at one end forming a hook 4 adapted to engage the inner edge of the angle bar 1. The other end of member 2; is bent downwardly forming a tongue 5, the latter having a screwthreaded opening 6 for the reception-of a thumb screw 7. The inner end of this thumb screw has a swiveled connection with a depending tongue 8 on member 3. This member 3 is bent in rectangular form as indicated with its upper face positioned against the under face of member 2, and
j ecting away said members held in this relationship by means of a metal strap 9 which projects around both of the members. The inner end of member 3 is'adapted to bear against the outer face of the angle bar 1, and the upper and lower bars of said member 3 are provided with registering openings 10, through which a tubular upright 11 projects. This upright 11 also extends through a slot 12 in member 2, and is held against vertical move.- ment by means of a collar 13 securely clamped to the upright by a set screw 14. This collar 13 may be adjusted vertically on the upright 11 so as to regulate the posi tion of the latter.
' On the upper end of upright 11, an inverted cup shaped cap 15 is positioned, and is provided at one side with an integral enlargement 16 having a circular series of radially positioned teeth 17 thereon. These teeth 17 are adapted to engage between corresponding teeth in an enlargement 18 on a V-shaped bracket 19,and to this V-shaped bracket 19, a table 20 is secured by screws 21. -The enlargements'18 'and16, cap 15, and upright 11 are all provided withregistering openings for the accommodation of a bolt 22 having a head at one end, and
a thumb nut 23 at its other end, whereby the said parts are clamped together.
To change the angle of the table, it is simply necessary to unscrew the thumb nut sufiiciently to permit the teeth of enlargements 16 and 18 to disengage when the table may be turned to the desired an 1e and secured in this angle, when the en argements are drawn together by screwing home the nut.
The table20 around its edge on its upper face, is made with a head or flange 24 which is desirable especially when the device is positioned at an angle, as this flange or bead forms a ledge to support a book.
While in Fi 1, the table is shown prorom the bed in normal use, when the articles are positioned thereon, this table will, be swung over the bed and be positioned at ,the proper angle in accordance with its use. .The clamp may be readily connected and. disconnected from the bed by turning the bolt 7 and when ositioned on the bed, the parts will be rigi ly held.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to ,the precise details set forth, but consider right, a bed clamp comprising two members slidable upon' each other and having registering openings therethrough for the reception of said upright, a hook on one member adapted to engage the inner edge of a bed side bar,and a screw constructed to move'the other member against the outer face of said bed side bar, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a table supporting upright, a bed clamp consisting of two members, one
member having a hook at one end, and :1 depending tongue at the other, said member having a slot therein, the other member. of general rectangular form, and having registering openings in its top and bottomportion, a strip connecting the two members, a
screw engaging in a threaded opening in name to this Specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
