To all whom/it may concern: v Be it known that I, DANIEL ,HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surgical-Accessory- Supporting Appliances, of which the following is a specification. I
My presentinvention relates generally to surgery and more particularly tov an appliance for supporting surgical accessories supporting in a proper and convenient position for use by or in the treatment of a patient confined to his or her bed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and easily manipulable surgical accessory-supporting appliance that may, be-
readily and quickly attached to any convenient frame-part of an ordinary bed whether the frame-part extends vertically or horizontally, whereby the accessory, whatever may be its intended purpose, will be properly positioned with relation to the patient to secure the best results with as little inconvenience to the patient as ossible.
()ne of the principal purposes 0 the in vention is to provide a simple and thoroughly practical appliance especially adapted for an irrigator or fountain syringe, said appliance being readily attachable to any part of the frame of ordinary bed or to an operating or bed-side table where the irrigating operations may be carried on to the best advantage and with the least possible annoyance and discomfort to the patient.
Briefly and specifically stated theinvention comprises a clamping member having a pair'of pivotally connected clamping jaws adapted to be brought into clamping engagement with a vertical or a horizontal frame-part of a bed or bed-side table, the said jaws being constructed and arranged to embracebed-frame parts or parts of a bedside table having difierent cross-sectional diameters. In other words the clamping member is adjustable and therefore applicable to frame-parts of different shapes'and diameters. One of the said clamping jaws is preferably provided with plural means arranged at right angles to each other, either one of which means isadapted to removably and interchangeably receive and retain, 1n

Inasmuch as my accessory-supporting appliance is especially adapted for use as an attachment to beds, I have shown, in Fig. 1
being usually joined or connected by means of ahorizontally arranged .connecting end rail 3. Of course the, particular construction of bed forms no part of the present invention and it is to be understood that the appliance may be attached to any ordinary bed or bed-side or operating table and to any desired and accessible part of the frame thereof.
The improved clamping member in the embodiment. of the invention illustrated, and as more clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3, 5 and 7, consists primarily of a pair of 0ppositely arrangedjaws numbered 4 and 5 respectively, said jaws being pivotally connected by means of a pintle 6 passing through alined sleeve portions 7 r of the jaws. The jaws are preferably oppositely arched or curved and the inner face of each curved portion is preferably covered or faced with a strip of yielding material 8, such as fabric or rubber, to prevent thejaws from scratching or marring the frame-part of the bed or other support to which the clamping member is attached. One of the jaws, as for instance the jaw 4, has a threaded screw 9 pivotally connected at 10 to the outer end thereof, the said screw 9 being preferably arched as shown and having a thumb-nut 12 threaded thereu on. The'other jaw, as 5, has a substantially flat wall 13 at its free end, there being an open slot "or notch 14, Fig. 5, cut into said flattened wall to receive the threaded screw 9 when the jaws are brought into clamping engagement with the frame-part of a bed, the clamping action of the jaws upon such frame-part being brought about by screwing the thumb-nut upon the threaded screw 9 until the end of the nut is in facial contact with the flat wall 13 of the jaw 5. 7
One of the jaws of the clamping member is provided with plural rod-supporting and retaining means arranged at right angles to a each other, with one or the other of which an accessory-supporting rod may be associated in order to hold the said rod in avertical position whether the said clamping device is attached to a vertical or to a horizontal frame-part of the bed. The lural supporting and retaining means, in t e instance shown, consists of a pair of open ended sleeves number 15 and 16 respectively, said sleeves being arranged at right angles to each other and preferably arranged adjacent the pivotal point 6 of the jaws, the

In order to securely lock the accessorysupporting rod, when said rod is brought into associated relation with one or the other of the sleeves, I have provided a looking device which, in the'instance shown, is common to both the said plural means or sleeves, the said locking device being adapted to be moved into and out of locking en-' gagement with therod and adapted to support the rod in any desired vertically adjusted position.
In the instance shown, the locking device consists of a non-rotatableplate 17 having locking lugs 18 projecting from the innerface thereof, said locking lugs each ex-' tending through an opening 19 formed through the outer wall of each sleeve. In the particular construction of locking device illustrated, there are two pairs of lugs, one pair being arranged in a plane at right angles to the other pair so that in the said construction there are two locking lugs as sociated with each sleevewhereby the accessory-supporting rod will be gripped simultaneously by both lugs when said rod is associated with eitherone or the other 01 the sleeves. The lockin device, or plate 17, is supported by a threa ed screw 21 rojecting outward from the outer face 0 one of the sleeves, the said plate 17 being provided with an opening through which the screw may pass. A wing-nut 22 is threaded upon the screw 21 and is adapted when rotated to engage the outer face of the plate and. force the locking lugs into engagement with the accessory-supporting rod inserted inone of the sleeves. The-outer end of the screw 21 is'preferably flanged or swaged suflieientlyv to prevent the wing-nut from being 1 removed therefrom, thus obviatin any danger of the parts becoming separat and lost. i
I prefer to so arrange the locking plate 1.7, with relation to the wing-nut 22, that the said plate will be positively moved in and out, or into andout 0f rod-locking position upon simple turning movement of the wingnnt, and to this end I provide the wing-nut with a flange or flanges 23 .which is or areswaged over the innerface of the locking plate 17 around the opening therethrough as more clearly shown in Fig.3 whereby the plate and the nut will beinseparably but swivelly joined, so that "the nut may be ro-v tated without effecting rotation of the plate. It will be noted that in the construction.
illustrated, the locking plate 17 is mounted so that it may be moved into and out of locking engagement-with the accessory-suping rod. While I have shown the looking plate as providedwith two pairs of locking lugs, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to this specific construction as obviously a plate with a lesser numberof locking lugs arranged to cooperate with the two sleeves could be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.-
The accessory-supporting device, in one of the instances shown, consists of a tubular rod 25, which if desired, may bemade in one or more sections and suitably joined as by a threaded detachable connection 26, Fig. 5. By making the rod in detachable sections the appliance as a whole may be more closely compacted for carrying or packing pur-'* poses. The rod is of. such cross-sectional shape and diameter as to freely but closely fit within one or the other of the receiving and retaining sleeves 15 and 16, depending upon whether the clamping device isattached to a vertical or to a horizontal rail or frame-part of a bed or other support. The upper end of the rod 25 'is provided with a head 27 having a swiveled connection with the rod so that it may be rotated thereupon in a horizontal direction, the said head being provided with one or more hooks 28, 29, one of which is preferably arranged closely adjacent the rod 25 so that when an accessory in the form of an irrigating tank or vessel such as 30, Fig. I, is suspended from the hook 28, the flat wall 31 of said vessel will lie close to and be supported in part by the rod 25. The hook 29 may or may not fOIIIHl part of the head, but when it is employed its function is to support a vessel or tank not provided with a flat wall such as the wall 31 before referred to. If desired I may provide the head 27 with a ring 27, Fig. 6, by which the rod may be suspended from a suitable supporting pin -or hook when not in use.
The head 27 maybe swivelly connected to the end of the rod 25 in any suitable manner and in Fig. 6, I have illustrated one form of such a connection which consists in providing the head with a stud 32 which passes through an aperture in a disk 33 fitted the upper end of the tubular rod 25, the mner end of the stud being split or coned and swaged over laterally to effect the swivel connection. The object of swivelly connecting the head is to enable the surglcal accessory supported thereby, such as an irrigating vessel, to be brought into convenient po- 1tl011 for use after the rod 25,,has been adusted and locked. f

In Fig. 1, I have shown, at the head of the bed, one of my improved clamping members as holding or supporting an arm. 37 carrying in its outer end a holder for a sanitary sputumcup (not shown) such as are now commonly used in hospitals, and sanatoriums, the said holder, in the instance shown, consisting of a skeleton frame made up of a pairof substantially U-shaped metal strips 38 joined by a U-shaped connecting strip 39, the. upwardly extending legs 40 of which are joined to the strips 38, the sanitary sputum cup (not-shown) being supportedby the holdersformed by said strips.

It will also be understood that the said rod may be adjusted vertically to bring the swiveled head thereof with its associated hook to different heights relative to the patient occupying the bed. This has es ecial advantages as in cases where the app iance is used to support an accessory such as an irrigator wherein a strong or a mild flow of the irrigating fluid is desired depending upon the particular treatment to be given the patient.
,It will be understood that the clamping member together with the accessory-supporting rod constitute in effect a unitary structure, the one being combined and cooperating with the other to produce the complete appliance; although I wish it unrods, than those herein shown, may e used in connection with. my improved clamping device, and also that my improved supporting rods may be employed with other forms of clamping devices, without departing from the spirit of the invention. v
What I claim is: r r 1. An appliance of the character described, comprising a clamp consisting of a pair of pivotally connected clamping members having arched faces adapted to embrace vertical or horizontal posts or rails of different diameters, means for retaining said pivoted members in clamping relation, plural means arranged at right angles to each other, carried by one of said pivoted members adjacent the pivotal point thereof for receiving and retaining in vertical position an accessory holding rod, depending upon whether the clamp is applied to a vertical or to a horizontally positioned post or rail, an accessory holding rod interchangeably applicable to either of said plural receiving and retaining means, and a locking device havingseparate locking lugs common to 'both said plural means for locking the said accessory holding rod in different vertically adjusted positions according to whether the said holding rod is arranged in cooperative relation with one or the other of the said plural means. f

An appliance of the character described, comprising a clamp having a pair of pivotally connected jaws, meansfor retaining said jaws in clamping engagementwith a suitable support, a pair of open ended sleeves arranged at right angles to each other carried by one of said jaws adjacent its pivotal point, said sleeves adapted to receive and retain an accessory holding device in vertical position, a nonrotatable locking device common to both said sleeves, said a locking device having gripping portionspassing through the walls of each of the sleeves and intersecting. the openings therethrough, and means for caus ing the said gripping portions of the locking device to enter the sleeves.
3. An appliance of the character vdescribed, comprising a clamp having a pair of pivotally connected jaws, means for retaining said jaws in clamping enga ement with a suitable support, a pair 0 open ended sleeves arranged at right angles to each other, carried by one of said jaws, said sleeves adapted to receive and retain an accessory holding-device in vertical rposition, a locking devicecommon to both said sleeves, said locking device having. gripping portions adaptedto pass throughthe walls of each of the sleeves soas to intersect the openings therethrough, a threaded stem ex tending outward from a point centrally of the pair of sleeves, said stem extending through,an opening in the locking device, a nut threaded upon the stem, and a swivel connection between the nut and lockingde vice for positively moving the gripping por-,,
