ADJUSTABLE WAITER FOR INVALID BEDSTEADS OR CHAIRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,733, dated April 24, 1894. Application filed January 31, 1893. Serial No. 460,186- (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL 000K, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Waiters for Invalid Bedsteads or Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The special object of the invention is to make an adjustable waiter for use by an invalid on his bed or chair.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings and thenpointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view partly in section showing all the parts connected together; Fig. 2, a detail view of the table or waiter with its subjacent pivoted shank; Fig. 3, a detail view of the horizontal arm; Fig. 4, a similar view of the stafi or support; Fig. 5, a detail perspective view of the clamp which is to be used for a hospital bed, and Fig. 6 a similar view of the long clamp which is intended for ordinary bedstead railsl In the drawings, A represents the table or waiter which is made concave on top or flanged around the edge, and has, on the under side, the jointed shank a which fits loosely into the vertical tube 1) integral with the outer end of the arm B. By means of the joint in the shank a, the table or waiter may be turned down so as to be in a vertical plane when the joint is raised above the tube 1), and when in a horizontal plane, the joint goes within the tube. The setscrew a holds the shank a, in the tube 1). The arm B has the tube 12 at one end and the socket b at the other, the latter not extending through the arm at the top, and connected with the upper endof the stalf O by a screwjoint. c is a collar adjustably held on the staff by a setscrew 0'.

D is the clamp for holding the device on ordinary bed-rails of difierent height or to an invalid chair or table. This is made in two parts D D the former provided with the right-angled plate 61, headed rivets d d and clamp-screw d adapted to be turned by the thumb and forefinger in the short arm Wherein is made a suitable thread. The part D has the main plate (I with a series of key hole slots to receive the rivets d, parallel arms d d between which is the tube 61 open at both ends and on the other side of the plate, at the top, a hook d on one arm which co-operates with the swiveled grip d on the thumbscrew 01 to grip the bedrail on both sides as well as on top. The staif passes through the tube d and supports the collar 0 which rests upon the clamp to which it may also be held by the thumbscrew d the screw being 1ooscried when it is desired to adjust the arm B in a horizontal plane. E represents the clamp which is to be used on hospital bedsteads. It has the tubular body a open at each end, the parallel rightangled arms 6 e and the thumbscrew 9 working through a suitable thread in arm 6 and having, at the end, a swiveled grip e. The lower arm e is also provided with a transverse hole so that the stafi may be passed horizontally as well as vertically through the clamp and be held by the screw e Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

In an attachment for invalid beds or chairs, the combination of the waiter A, horizontal bar 13, staff 0, and clamp D, the clamp section D provided with a series of key hole slots, and parallel arms connected by a tube through which the staff passes, and the clampsection D carrying. headed rivets to engage the key hole slots; whereby the waiter, horizont-aibar, staif and outer section of clamp may be readily removed from the inner section of the clamp, so as to be out of the way when not in use.
