NrTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST LOEHNER AND EDIVIN G. NEIVMAN, OF S". LOUIS, MISSOURI.
INVALID-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,319, dated November 3, 1891.
Application iiled September 18, 1889. Serial No. 324,265. (No model.)
To cr/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that we, AUGUST LOEHNER and EDWIN G. NEWMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Tables, of which the following is a full description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to invalid-tables which are adapted for attachment to bedsteads and chairs; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a table provided with our im- Fig. 2 is a sectional plan ot the table inverted. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the adjustable clamp by which the table may be secured to a bedstead or chair. Fig. trepresents a clamp-block detached.
A designates a tubular standard, which supports the table B. O indicates a perforated head, through which the said standard passes, the head being adj ustably secured thereto by a set-screw a. A horizontal tubular bar b has one end passed through a perforation in the head C, said barbeing secured by a thumb-nut c on the end ot' the bar and a screw e in the head O, which screw prevents any turning of said bar. A tube d fits on the horizontal bar b and has a sliding movement thereon, the said tube being adjustably secured to said bar bya set-screw c. The plate forming the top of the table B is made fast to the tube d, and the latter being movable on the bar b the said plate may be moved from the standard A, as desired, and fixed in position by means of the screw c.
A clamping device for securing the standard A to the side part of a bedstead or chair is formed of a tube D, an upper jaw E, and alower jaw F, the said clamp being adjustable in extent, so that it may be set to ernbrace either the side ot abedstead (indicated at X in Fig. l) or a round rail, as when the side rails are formed ot' tubes. The tube D The lower jaw F is perforated or provided with an opening conforming to the flanged tube D and has a sliding movement on said tube, the flange g serving to keep the jaw F on the same vertical plane with the upper jaw. The upper jaw is grooved where it closes on the side rail, the grooved surface being serrated, and the lower movable jaw has a seat formed therein to receive a clamp-block Gto close against the side rail from below. The said clamp-block is provided with a serrated groove m to receive the rail, and has flanges i at its ends to lap on the jaw and retain the block in place. The block G, being loosely placed in its seat, may be raised somewhat for tightening the clamp by means of a screw s in a threaded hole in the jaw F, directly under said'block. The clamp is adj ustably secured to the standard A by means of a screw h back of the jaw E, and the lower jaw F is adjustably secured to the tube D by means of the screw h. By this construction the table may be adjusted in elevation on the standard A, and may be set in position extending over and across the bed or at any angle therefrom. The top plate of the table may also be moved on thbar b from the standard A and fixed in position over another part of the bed, as may be desired, by a person occupying the bed.
I indicates a tubular standard, which is inserted in the standard A and extends upward therefrom. The said standard I is adj ustably secured to the standard A by means of ascrew n, and may be extended or let down in said standard A, as desired.
To the top of the standard I is secured a perforated head k, through which is passed a tube L, which is held in a horizontal position and is adjustably secured to the head 7n by a screw o. A hook p is connected with a sleeve, which is secured on said tube L by a screw, the purpose of the hook being for suspending a lamp over the table. A gas-burnerq is connected with the tube L for use when gas-light is desired, and a iexible tube for gas may be applied to one end of said tube, as indicated at S.
Ve claim- The combination, with the standard A of a table, of a clamp formed of a tube D, provided with a longitudinal flange g, a jaw IOO lower said block, substantially as and for the purposes described.
