Be it known that I, CHARLES LYONS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating-Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to certain newand usefulimprovements in operating-tables, and relates more particularly to that class used by surgeons to support the patient for the purpose of performing operations relating to the back of the patient-such as the rectum. I propose to position the patient so that the surgeon will experience little or no difficulty in having full and complete access to that portion of the anatomy to be operated on, thus increasing the chances of a successful operation.

It is a further aim of the invention to enable the supporting medium for the head and shoulders of the patient to be readily adj ustable in a horizontal plane, whereby persons of varying statures may be readily accommodated without inconvenience.

With the above and other objects in view my invention further resides in the novel deform, it being essential, however, that the support lie in a substantial vertical plane,

though slight deviations to cause the support to assume an inclined position may be resorted to, as may be found necessary by the surgeon, in order to position the patient according to that portion of the back to be operated upon. This support is of a substantially rectangular form and at its upper edge has immovably secured thereto sleeves or bearings 2, bored to receive a rod 3, the rod having a sliding fit in order that the same may be adjusted in a longitudinal direction. One of the bearings is provided with a set-screw 4 for engagement with the rod to secure the latter in its adjusted position.

I propose to support the patient through the medium of the knees and shoulders and provide in conjunction therewith an adjustable head-rest, and to these ends I mount upon the rods supports adjustable toward and away from one another in a longitudinal plane, so that persons of varying statures may be conveniently accommodated.

The shoulder-support consists of a sleeve 5, fitted for sliding movement on the rod 3, the sleeve carrying athumb or set screw 5 to secure the same in its adjusted position. arm 6 is secured to or formed integral with this sleeve, the arm being of a substantially Z shape and being flattened at its free or outer end. The shoulder-support proper consists of a support 7, shaped to conveniently and comfortably receive the patients shoulder, it beingpermissible to pad this support should it be deemed advisable. This support is secured centrally of its length to an L-shaped arm 8, the base of the L being provided with an elongated slot 8 for the purpose of receiving a headed bolt 9, carried by the base of the arm 6, the bolt being threaded at its lower end and receiving a thumb-screw 10 to secure the L-shaped arm in its adjusted position. Clips ll are riveted or otherwise secured to the base of the Z-shaped arm, these clips serving as guides engaging the side edges of the L-shaped arm in order to prevent lateral displacement of the latter. ends of these clips are bent over at right angles to extend over the base of the Z-shaped arm 6 and are spaced in order that a more free and easy movement of the L-shaped arm may be had when the latter is being adjusted.

The support for the head of the patient comprises an arm 12, secured to or formed integral with a sleeve 14, this sleeve also being provided with a set-screw or thumb-screw to The secure the samein its adjusted position. At its lower end this arm carries a base or support 15, which may also be padded for the convenience of the patient, this base or support extending at a substantial right angle to the support 1. It will be obvious from the foregoing that by the employment of my im proved device the shoulder-support may be adjusted laterally with relation to the support 1 and may also be adjusted in alongitudinal plane. It will be further observed that the arms 6 and 12 rest at their lower ends against the support 1, which thereby acts as a brace and serves to retain the arms in a more rigid and substantial manner.

In order to provide a knee-support for the patient, I employ in connection with the support 1 a laterally-projecting plate or shelf 16, which is suitably secured to the face of the support 1 adjacent to the lower side and inner end thereof. In employing this device it is proposed to have the patient rest his knees on the plate or shelf 16 and place his left arm over the upper portion of support 1, permitting the arm to extend on the opposite side of the latter, thereby bracing himself and greatly adding to his comfort. The head of the patient is intended to rest upon the support 15. This device is of great valuein performing operations not only relating to the rectum, but to all parts of the back of the body.

In carrying the invention into practice I have found it necessary to employ certain details of construction, which may be readily varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with the support or the like, of a sho ulder-support movably secured to the firstnamed support, means for adjusting said shoulder-support in a lateral direction, and a head-support movably secured to said firstnamed support.

2. In adevice of the type set forth, the combination with a support, of a shoulder-support and a head-support secured to the firstnamed support, and movable in relation to each other, in a longitudinal direction, and means for permitting lateral movement of the shoulder-support.

In a device of the type set forth, the combination with a support, of a rod secured to said support, an arm movably secured to said rod, a knee-support, a shoulder-support adjustably secured to said arm, and a head-support mounted on said rod.

4. In a device of the type set forth, the combination with a support, of a rod secured thereto, an arm movably mounted on said rod, a knee-support, a shoulder-support adjustably mounted on said arm, means for securing the shoulder-support in its adjusted position, a second arm carried by the rod, and adjustable in a longitudinal direction, and a head-support mounted on said last-named arm.

5. In a device of the type set forth, the combination of a support 1, a knee-support projecting therefrom, a rod mounted on the upper edge of said support 1, arms movably mounted on said rod, means for retaining said arms in a rigid position, a head-support carried by one of the arms, a supporting-arm movably connected to the other of said arms, a shoulder-support carried by the said supporting-arm, and movable in a lateral direction, and clips for guiding said supporting arm.
