Description

Mi E. BRENNAN.
CHIN SUPPORT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 24, 1921.
Patented Nov. 22, 1921.
MICHAEL E. BRENNAN,
OF HUDSON, NEV] YGRK.
CHIN-SUPPORT.
Application filed May 24, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIoHAnL E. BRENNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of Columbia and State-of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chin-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to appliances for use by undertakers, and has for its object the provision of a device for properly supporting the chin and lower jaw of a corpse so as to hold these parts rigid and in the correct position to permit effective circulation of the embalming fluid.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is readily adjustable for use upon corpses of different sizes and for enabling the chin and consequently the head to be tilted to any desired position, the device being furthermore not displeasing in appearance and being also capable of folding into a small compass so as to occupy but little space in an undertakers kit bag.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to apply and adjust, highly efficient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
lVith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a side elevation in applied position,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof detached, and v k Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown my device as comprising a yoke 10 which is formed of two similar curved rod or heavy wire sections 11 formed at one end with interengaging eyes or loops 12 whereby the two sections may be folded together wh nthe device is not in use. Associated with the other end of the yoke is a cross bar 13 which is formed with holes 14 for the passage of the arms of the yoke, set screws 15 being threaded into the ends of this cross bar and engaging the yoke arms whereby to hold the bar rigid.
out my device Specification of Letters Patent.
and .slidable block Patented Nov. 22, 1921.. Serial No. 472,150.
mounted upon the cross bar 13 therealong, is. a blockmember 16 formed with atransverse hole 17 through which is. slidably adjustably mounted the shank 18 of a .chinrest proper which is provided at one end with a concaved plate 19 disposable againstthe chin of a corpse. A set screw 20 is threaded into the block 16 and intersects the hole 17 for the purpose of clamping the shank 18 at any desired position. I
In the use of the device the yoke is placed about the neck of the cadaver with the hinge Rotatably connection of the yoke sections at the back of the neck and with the arms of the yoke extending-above the shoulders and over the chest. The cross bar 13 is placed in position upon the yoke and the set screws 15 are tightened to maintain this adjustment. The block member 16 isthen slid along the cross bar it necessary or is turned to the desired. position to bring the chin support proper in correct position so that the plate 19 engaging the chin will engagethe chin at the mostadva-ntageo'us location. By adjusting the position of the. shank 18 through the block 16, it is apparent that the head may be forced backwardly to a greater or less cvtent or may be allowed to come forward toward the chest. In case it should be desired to hold the head slightly to either side, it is apparent that thismay be accomplished by sliding the block member 16 somewhat toward either end of the cross bar 13. It is probably preferable that he 16 shouldfit fairly closely uponthe cross bar to prevent too great freedom of movement.
From the foregoingdescription and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simple and yet highly efficient chin supporting device which is easily conditions or to permitcarrying out any necessary manipulations incidental to the undertaking art. It is also to be noted that all the parts of the device may be readily disassembled and packed in a very small space for convenience in transportation or storage.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in. the form, construction and arrangementor" parts as adjustable to meet varying will not depart from the spiritof the invention orthe scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
over the chest, a crossbar slidably adjustably secured upon the arms 01" the yoke, 21
block member movably mounted upon said cross bar, and a chin support proper including a curved shank slidably adjustably connected with said block member and carrying a chin or jaw engaging plate.
2. A' device of the character described comprising a yoke of rigid material, across bar slidably adjustably connected with the arms ofthe yoke, a block member rotatably mounted upon said cross bar, and a chin support proper including a shank slidably adjustably connected with said block member;
3. A device of the character described comprising a yoke of rigid material, a cross bar slidably adjustably connected with the arms of the yoke, a block member rotatably mounted upon said cross bar, and .a chin support proper including a shank slidably adjustably connected with said block memher said block member being also slidable along said cross bar.
In testimony whereof I hereto aifix my signature. MICHAEL E. BRENNAN.
