Description

y 1934. F. x. GINGRAS 6 ADJUSTABLE TABLE FOR HOSPITAL BEDS Filed Jan. 22, 1934 /n van/or EX. G/hyras Patented May 1, 1934 UNITED STATES ADJUSTABLE TABLE FOR HOSPITAL BEDS Francois Xavier Gingras, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Application January 22 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in adjustable tables for hospital beds, and its main object is to provide a device of this character that is readily attached to the bed post of a bed; is readily adjustable for use as a table or reading-stand; and is also adjustable vertically and laterally so that it will be convenient to a person in said bed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device disclosed as attached to a bed post and in position for use;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation view of the device;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on line A-A of Fig. 2 disclosing the adjustable table in side elevation.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a bed, dis- 0 closed in Fig. 1 in dash and dot lines, and 2 is one of the bed-posts. To said bed-post is secured the clamps 3, said clamps consisting of jaws adapted to engage the bed-post, said jaws terminating in bearings in which is movably supported the tubular member 4.
Upon the upper end of said member 4 is mounted a T-joint 5, 6 being a horizontal tubular member with one end secured at right angles in said T-joint and with the other end secured in an elbow 7. In said elbow 7 is mounted the tubular union 8, which projects above said elbow 7 and, at the upper end of which, is mounted the T- joint 9. In said T-joint 9 is secured the horizontal tubular member 10, the other end of which 0 is mounted in the T-joint 11, in which is mounted the tubular standard 12, and on which is loosely mounted the T-joint 13.
In said T-joint 13 is mounted the horizontal tubular member 14, 15 being a table adjustably 40 mounted thereon.
Upon the underside of said table are suitably disposed the two angle-bars 16, to one end of each of which is pivctally secured at 19 a supporting arm 17 which is fulcrumed at 18 upon the 5 tubular member 1 1. 20 is a link, one end of which is pivotally secured at 21 adjacent the other end of each of said angle-bars and 22 is another link pivotally connecting the link 20 to the free end of the supporting arm 17. It will readily be seen that to tilt the table 15, the link 20 and connecting link 22 simply have to straighten-out and to dispose the table in horizontal position, the said link 20 and link 22 are closed as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
In order to adjust the table at a desired height,
, 1934, Serial No. 707,708
an adjustable collar 23 is provided upon the standard 12, and 24 is a pin passing through a suitable hole therein and adapted to engage any one of a series of holes 25 provided in said standard. The T-joint 13 carrying the tubular member 14 which supports the table 15 preferably rests upon the top of said collar 23, so that if the collar is lowered, the table 15 will accordingly be lowered.
Upon the tubular member 10 may be provided a the tray 26 secured thereto by means of the brackets 27.
From the above described construction, it will be seen that the table may be adjusted vertically as well as horizontally over the bed, to suit the convenience of a person in bed, and that the standard 12 will firmly support the table 15 and practically eliminate all vibration.
In the T-joint 11, is secured the upturned end of the horizontal rod 28 which is pivotally secured at its other end (at 29) to one of the side bars 30 of the bed. The rod 28 is moved horizontally within the guide-member 32 provided upon the underside of the side bar 31 and is also movably supported upon said guide by means of the roller 33.
What I claim as my invention is:-
A device of the class described, in combination with a bed post and the side-bars of a bed, means for attachment to said bed-post, a vertical member rotatably mounted in said attaching means, an upright member suitably distanced from said vertical member, connecting means between said vertical member and said upright member, a second upright member suitably distanced from said aforementioned upright member, means connecting said last mentioned members together, a table rotatab-ly mounted upon the upper end of said second upright member, said second upright member extending horizontally and being pivoted at its free end to one of the sidebars, and a guide-member mounted upon the other side-bar and supporting said second upright member, substantially as described.
