tlNlTED STATES FRANK EASTLUND, 0F OMAHA,
NEBRASKA.
BEDCLOTHES-SUPPORT.
' Application filed April 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK EAs'rLUNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedclothes-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to bed clothes supports and has for itS'object to provide a de vice of this character which is simple in construction, and so constructed that bed clothing may be supported in such a manner as not to bear upon a patient in the bed and particularly adapted for use in hospitals.
A. further object is to provide a bed clothes support comprising a vertically disposed and adjustable standard carried by a clamp which may be secured to a bed, the upper end of said standard having pivoted thereto transversely disposed arms, the outer ends of said arms terminating in right angle portions having bifurcations in which bifurcations are pivoted arms which arms support the bed clothing. Also to provide the standard with a vertically movable and adjustable sleeve, to which sleeve is pivoted the inner ends of upwardly and outwardly extending arms, which arms have their upper ends pivoted to the transversely disposed pivoted arms carried by the standard.
A further object is to provide a bed clothes support, which is so constructed that when it is not in use, it may be folded into a compact package for storage purposes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings't- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bed clothing support, showing the same applied to a bed.
Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal sectional view through the angled end of one of the transversely disposed pivoted arms.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a vertically disposed rod, which Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
1921. Serial No. 459,265.
rod has its lower end disposed in an aperture 2 of a clamp 3 and is held in any vertical adjusted position by means of the set screw 4. The clamp 8 is held on one of the vertical rods 5 of the bed 6 by means of set screws 7, said clamp 3 being so constructed that it may be secured in various vertical positions on the rod 5. The upper end of the rod 1 is threaded as at 8 in a castin 9, which casting is provided with oppositely disposed bifurcations 10 and pivoted as at 11 in said bifurcations 10 are transversely disposed arms 12, the outer ends of which terminate in right angled portions 13, which right angled portions extend inwardly in relation to the bed. The right angled portions 13 have their inner sides provided with recesses 14:, in which recesses are disposed the inner ends 15 of inwardly extending arms 16, which arms in connection with the arms 12 support the bed clothing. Arms 16 are pivoted in the recesses 14 on screws 17, which screws when tightened hold the arms 16 against inward movement. The free ends of the arms 16 are provided with balls 17 for preventing tearing of the bed clothing when said bed clothing is thrown over the support as a whole. It is also to be understood that the arms 16 may be of any length desired.
Slidably mounted on the rod 1 is a sleeve 18, which sleeve is provided with oppositely disposed bifurcations 19. in which bifurcations are pivoted as at 20,. the lower ends of upwardly and outwardly extending arms 21, the upper ends of which arms are provided wi h bifurcations 22. which receive the arms 12, and whi h arms 12 are pivoted thereto as at 23. The upwardly and outwardly extending arms 21 form supporting and bracing arms for the transversely disposed arms 12, when the set screw 24 carried by the sleeve 18 is tightened. It will be seen that by moving the collar 18 upwardly or downwardly and securing the collar in raised or lowered position the bed clothing may be held at various elevations. Also that a further adjustment may be obtained by adjusting the rod 1 in the clamp 8.
When it is desired to fold the cover support, set screws 17 and 2d are loosened, the arms 16 folded inwardly in the direction of the arms 12, then the sleeve 18 is forced downwardly, which action will allow the arm 12 to assume a position adjacent the rod 1, therefore it will be seen that the bed clothing supporter may be collapsed for storage purposes.
From the above it will be seen' that a bed clothing support is provided which is simple in construction and one which may be easily and quickly applied to a bed and collapsed as desired for storage purposes.
A bed clothes clamp is secured to the rod 1 by means of a screw 26 and between the jaws 27 of which clamp the bed cover may be clamped and held against displace ment. i
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a bed, of a bed clothing support therefor, said support comprising a vertically disposed rod, clamping means for clamping the lower end of said rod to the bed, outwardly extending arms having their inner ends pivotally connected to the upper end of said rod, arms pivotally connected to the outer ends of the pivoted a and adapted to move in a horizontal plane, a vertically adjustable sleeve carried by the rod, upwardly and outwardly extending braces pivoted to the vertically adjustable sleeve, the upper ends of said braces being pivot-ally neonate connected to the outwardly extending arms carried by the upper end of the rod.
2. The combination with a bed, of a bed clothing support therefor, said support comprising a verticallydisposed rod, the clamp carried by the lower end of said rod,'means for adjusting the vertically disposed rod in said clamp, said clamp formin means for attaching the vertically disposed rod to a bed, outwardly extending arms having their inner ends pivotally connected to the upper end of said rod, the outer ends of said outwardly extending arms terminatin in right angle portions in a horizontal plane, said right angle portions being provided with recesses on the inner faces thereof horizontally disposed rods having one of their ends pivoted in the recesses of the rightangled portions, means for clamping said horizontally disposed arms in the recesses, a vertically movable sleeve on the rod, means for holding said sleeve in various positions on the rod, and upwardly and outwardly extending braces pivoted to the sleeve and having their upper ends pivotally connected to the outwardly extending arms.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'liix my signature.
FRANK EASTLUND.
