Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1912.
Application filed October 7, 1911'. SeriaLNo. 653,300.
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawm s.
Ihis invention is an improved invalids table, adapted to be attached to a bedstead and removed therefrom at will and to be also adjusted to any desired position, the object of the invention being to provide a novel table of this character which is extremely cheap and simple, is strong and durable and which may be attached to a bed stead and adjusted to any desired position very expeditiously and with very little trouble.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective of an invalids table constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same attached to oneof the side rails of a bedstead; and Fig. 2 is partly an elevation and partly a vertical sectional view of the same on a larger scale.
In accordance with my invention I provide a base 1, which is also a clamping member to secure the standard of the table on one of the siderails of a bedstead. In the embodiment of the invention here shown the base comprises an upper arm 2 and a lower arm 3, the upper arm being provided with an inclined portion 4t which converges to and is united with the inner end of the lower arm. The upper arm is widened vertically at its outer end and to reduce its weight and effect a corresponding economy in its manufacture this widened portion of the-upper arm of the base is formed with an opening 5. Both arms of the base are provided near their outer ends with alined, vertical openings, indicated at 6 and 7 for the reception of the standard 8. The standard is, in practice, preferably a tube or rod. The form of the base here shown is especially designed to be fitted on the side rail A of an ordinary iron bedstead. Within the scope of my invention, however, modifications may be made in' the construction of the base to adapt the same to be fitted on a bed rail of any form.
At the outer end of the upper armof the base is a threaded. opening in which is a set screw 9 to engage the standard and thereby clamp the latter to the base at any desired vertical adjustment. It will be observed .upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings that the inclined portion 4 of the upper arm of the base is on the inner side of the bed rail and that the standard is on the outer .side of the bed rail so that the base is held securely in place on the bed rail and yet may be moved longitudinally thereon to adjust the table lengthwise of the bed, as may be desired. It will be understood that by first withdrawing the standard 8 from the lower arm of the base, the latter may be removed from the bed rail.
The table top 10 may be of any suitable size and shape. At its outer end is an attaching device 11 which is here shown as a hinge comprising a member 12 which is medially secured under the outer end of the table top and a member 13, which is considerably thicker than the member 12, is provided with a central opening through which extends a reduced threaded stud 14 which is at the upper end of the standard, so that the said member 13 bears on the shoulder 15 formed by the standard at the base of the stud. A winged nut 16 is screwed on the stud, to bear on the member 13 and clamp the same in place. It will be understood that the attaching device pivotally connects the table top to the standard so that the table top may be swung with the standard as a pivot to any desired position and it will be also understood that since the pintle of the hinge is horizontal, the table top may be disposed either horizontally or at any desired inclination. To support the table top the same is provided with a forked brace 17. The arms of this brace are pivotally connected at the under side of the table top, at a suitable distance from the inner end of the latter, as at 18, and the inner end of the said brace is formed with a crotch 19 to bear against the standard at any desired point. To prevent the base from slipping vertically on the standard I provide the latter with a supporting collar 20 which is secured in place, at any desired adjustment on the standard, by means of a set screw 21.
It will be obvious that parts of my improved invalids table may be readily disassembled so that the same may be very compactly disposed to be packed, stored or transported. p
Having thus described my invention I claim:
The combination with a base adapted for attachment to a bed rail, said base being formed with upper and lower apertured members adapted to embrace the rail said members being formed with openings, a standard mounted in said opening and adapted to extend across the outer side of the rail, a set screw carried by one of said members and arranged to impinge against the standard to hold the same in difi'erent vertically adjusted positions, the standard being provided at its upper end with a threaded stud, a hinge provided with a leaf and an apertured member which latter is mounted for a turning movement on said stud, a binding nut acting on the stud against said member, a table top secured to the other member of the hinge, the members of the hinge being connected by a horizontal pivot, a set collar encircling the standard and Vertically adjustable thereon, and a brace pivotally connectedfat one end to the under face of the table top and formed with a forked opposite end adapted to partially encircle the rod and have a bearing thereon, the forked end of the brace being adapted to detachably rest upon the upper edge of the set collar.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atfiX my signature in the presencev of two witnesses.
