To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, CHARLES POLYAK, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at WVarren, in the countyo'fTrumbull and State of'Oh io, have invented certainne w and useful Improvements in Reading-Stands, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in reading stands.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a reading stand especially adapted for hospital beds, the same being readily cletacheclwvlien desired and adjustable at a convenient point for the'use of the occupant of the bed.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a revolving stand that may be readily tilted for use, arranged for quick ataqhm o a de a me f omt an l iron side portion of a bed or cot whereby a supporting portion is resiliently maintained over the bed.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a stand attachment for beds that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, simple in construction and light in weight, the same being easily assembled and disassembled at will.

In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views,

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device operatively arranged upon the side rail of a bed, the said rail being shown in section and the support or table being indicated by dotted lines in an adjusted inclined position.

Fig. 2 is an elevational view thereof from a point outwardly of the bed rail.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the socket and post members with a side section of the socket removed.

My device being adapted for holding reading matter or eatables at a suitable position adjacent a bed, the same is herein indicated as mounted upon the angle iron side rail 10, such as those usually found upon cots and beds, a special form of anchoring clamp 11 being arranged for this purpose.

A strip 12 of resilient metal forms the main support for the device having a bifurcated or inverted V-shaped lower end portion13 the opposite legs 14 ofwhich have inwardly bent loops or feet 15 aclaptecl" for fitting over the horizontal base flange 16 of the rail 10. The legs 14 are arranged'with inwardlyprojecting offsets or bonds 17 above the feet 15 for accommodatinrr the'upright flange 18 of the rail 10. Tt will be understood that the levers 19 are readily separated from the leg ends 22 by means of the handlesQ carried .by' the said levers and thereby permitting the feet 5 o-bemeee d up t e ai 10 11 vers 19 are then swung downwardly'into engagement with the leg extensions 22 firmly clamping the support 12 to the said rail 10.

A socket 25 is arranged with a side slot or recess 26 adapted for receiving the upper free end 27 of the support 12 which end is arranged substantially vertically and is arcuate in cross section, as best illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The socket 25 is formed in two opposite sections secured together by means of bolts 28 and adapted for journaling the cylindrical lower end 29 of a mounting post 30. The said end 29 is provided with an enlargement 31 for preventing the post from being withdrawn from the socket 25.

A table or board 32 is centrally pivoted as at 33 upon the top of the post 30 while a substantially semicircular plate 94 is carried by the bottom of the table 32 having free movement through a transverse slot 35 in the post 30 when the table 32 is tilted. A pin 36 which is connected to the post by means of a chain 37 is adapted to pass through a slot 38 in the post and also through the desired one of several perforations 39 in the plate 34., when the table 32 is suitably adjusted.

From this detailed description of the in vention it will be seen that the socket 25 with the table 32 may be readily detached from the support 12 while the entire device is readily mounted upon the bed rail 10 when desired. The central portion of the support 12 is bent in an inclined arrangement between the clamp portion 11 and the socket engaging portion 27 thereof, so as to arrange the table 32 above the bed when the device is clamped thereon as herein clescribed. The table 32 may be tilted as found desirable and retained at the suitable adjustment by means of the member 36.

It will be seen that a serviceable device is arranged especially adapted for use upon.

adjacent the loops adapted for overlying within the angular side of a bed rail, the free end portions of said sides projecting outwardly of the loops and arranged with oppositely opening slots, levers pivoted to the sides of said end adapted for reception within the said slots when the device is positioned upon a rail, the said pivoted levers having slots therein adapted for receiving the said free ends of the sides, operating handles upon the upper ends of the levers and a table detachably mounted upon the other end of the strip.

2. An anchoring clamp for reading stands comprising a support, spaced legs at one end of the support having adj acently bent ofiset portions and angularly arranged looped portions extending at both sides of the legs with opposite slots at the sides of the legs opposite the said loops, whereby an angle iron is adapted to be received Within the said loops and offset portions when the device is mounted in its operative arrangement, levers pivoted to said legs above the oliset portions thereof and at opposite sides of they legs therefrom, arranged with slots adapted for cooperating with the slots of the legs for forming a closed joint between the levers and free end portions of the legs, and operating handles upon the levers at opposite sides of their pivot points from the said slots of the levers.
