Be it known that I, WEBB W. MARKWooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county Aof Isanti and State of lMinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracket Bed-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in supports for a bed table, and the primary object of the invention is to provide Van attachment which is adapted to be easily applied to a bed, whereby a small table is positioned horizontally above the bed, and said table being supported in such a manner, that it is capable of being positioned at various angles, and being so constructed that the support may be folded to swing the table out of the way when desired.

Another object of the invention is to provideabed table attachment of this character provided with a support, which is especially adapted to be applied to the side rail of a bed, and which may be easily connected with, or removed from the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide a bed table attachment of this character which includes a pair of horizontal and vertically disposed telescopic standards, which are hingedly connected, said standards having one of their free ends connected with the bed rail, while the other .supports a table thereon, whereby the table may be easily removed from or placed in position over a bed.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a support of this character, that is detachably connected with a small table at its outer end, saidconnection including a spring catch, that automatically secures the table to the end ofthe support, when the same is positioned thereon.

Still a further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very eficient in operation. y

With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.

In ,describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The numeral 1 designates the side rail of an ordinary bed, which forms the stationary support, upon which the attachment is secured. This attachment is especially adapted to be applied to the'side rail of an iron bedstead, but the same is not limited to this application, as it may be secured to any stationary support, where the use of an attathment of this character is found desira e.

The attachment comprises a supporting means 2, which includes broadly a vertical standard 3, and a horizontal support 4, which have their ends hingedly connected as shown at 5. The lower end of the vertical standard 3 is provided with an outwardly extending apertured foot 6, which is adapted to be positioned on a railing clamp or bracket 7 which has its upper portion apertured to aline with the aperture in the foot 6 of the vertical standard 3.

The railing clamp is formed with a downwardly extending curved part at one edge thereof, which is adapted to hook under the vertical portion of the bed rail 1, and disposed adjacent the extremity of the bent portion, is a clamping screw 8, which is adapted to engage the bed rail. Positioned through the alining apertures in the Yfoot 6, and top 7 of the railing clamp, is a locking screw 9, which clamps these parts in position. By this construction, it will be obvious that the vertical standard 3 may be tion 11, having one portion of thehinge 5 detachably and rotatably connected therewith while the lower section 10 has its lower in various adjusted positions with respectV to each other, by means of a set screw, that is positioned through the lower section 10.

The horizontally disposed or upper section 4 of the support, is formed similarly tol the lower standard 3, that is it may be comprised of ytwo slidably engaged sections 13 and 14, the section 13 having its outer end forming one portion of the hinge 5, and the ,section 14 is `adapted to be connected with the table 15, in a manner to be hereinafter more fully described. These two sections are likewise held in various adjustable positions by means of a set-screw, whereby they may be adjusted to extend the desired distance across the bed when the support is inrposition. The outer end of the section 14 is inclined Vas shown at 1-8. A casing 19 has projecting securing earsV 2O formed on its outer edge at the top thereof, said ears being adapted to be flushagainst the bottom of' the table and to receive fastening members therethrough, to secure the casing in position. Thel outer edge of the casing-is provided with an upturned lip 21, that extends over-one edge of the table, intermediate the ends thereof, and which receives the off-set Vportion of the section 14, as will be hereinafter described. The casing 19 is provided with a transversely extending slot 22 therein, which receives the base portion of a bent spring clamp 23, which is substantially U-shaped having the extremities of its arms secured to the opposite sides of the casing as shown at 24, and said arms normally extending parallel lwith the casing, then projecting outwardly at right angles, tothe base portion, which is normally positioned within the slot. When the end of the section 14 is forced within the casing 19, the inclined extremity 18, thereof will lift the spring 23, and when the slot17 in the extremity of the section is positioned beneath the spring, the .base of said spring will drop therein,thus securely locking `the end of the section against withdrawal. In operation the device is positioned, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 .of the drawings, the rail engaging clamp that is connected with the lower end of' the standard 3, will be vse- 'ing to their telescopic construction, it is obvious that the device may be adjusted vertically or horizontally to the desired degree. When not in use, the horizontally disposed standards may be swung upwardly and outwardly, and then down parallel with the standards 3, whereby the table will be out of position. if desired the table maybe removed from the end of the standard 4, by releasing thev spring 23, andk withdrawing the table from the off-set portion of the standard. y

It may be used for supporting a book, a light," meals, etc., in the easiest and most accessible posi- 85 tion desired.
