UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
. OSCAR NELSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
READING-STAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,356, dated September 4, 1894.
Application filed November 1, 1 893. 1 Serial No. 489,706- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSCAR NELSON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Reading-Stand, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has relation to an improvement in reading stands and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended-claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a portable reading stand of simple and inexpensive construction that may be readily attached to a standard, chair or bed, and to so construct the device that it may be readily closed up and occupy a small space for shipment, or to' be taken in a trunk when traveling.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved reading stand the same being attached to a suitable standard; Fig. 2. an enlarged view partly in section showing sleeve 16; Fig. 3. a perspective view of my device as attached to a chair; Fig.4. a detail plan view of bracket and arm; Fig. 5. a section of same taken on line 55 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the'accompanying drawings wherein like numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures,-l0 designates a stand.-
, ard provided with a suitable base 11.
12 and 13 designate abracket the arms of which are provided with eyes 14 through which the standard 10 passes and is capable of vertical adjustment upon said standard by means of set screws 15 passing through the eyes 14 and adapted to pinch or bind the standard.
16 designates a sleeve, designed to slide upon the arm 12, and held in adjustment by means of a set screw 17, passing through a screw threaded opening in the sleeve and designed to pinch or bind against the arm 12. Supported centrally, upon the screw threaded portion 18 of the sleeve 16 is a U-shaped support or frame, consisting of the laterally extending portion 19 and the uprights 20. lflear the upper end of the upright 20 are openlngs presently explained.
22 designates a rectangular frame or board, provided a little to one side of its transverse center with screw threaded openlngs in which fit and work the set screws 21 which central part, the slide 24 is provided with a suitable manipulating'handle 2 5.
26 designates a bracket provided at one of itsends with an eye 27 encircling the standard 10 and adapted to be held in an adjusted position by means of a set screw 28 pass ng through a suitable screw threaded opening in the eye 27 and made to bind or pinch the standard 10.
29 indicates a lamp or other suitable light supported upon the bracket 26.
While I have shown my device as attached to a standard it will be readily seen that the same may be attached to a chair or bed, as shown in Fig. 3 in which 30 indicates the arm of the chair to which is attached bracket 31, supporting a table 32, provided with a central longitudinal slot 33 which is shown in'cross section Fig. 5, is wider at its lower edge,- than at itstop, in which fits and works a bolt 36, provided with an elliptical head as shown. The stem of the bolt 36 is drilled and threaded in which a thumb screw 37, the object of the bolt 36 and nut 37 is to clamp the adjustable slide 34, provided with an arm 35. I
.-To attach and use my improved reading stand taken in connection with the above description and accompanying drawings w1ll be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of a U-shaped framesupthrough which pass thumb nuts for a purpose 1 ported centrally by a sleeve 16. carried on guide rods 23 upon the swiveled frame or the extended arm 12 of a bracket and adapted board 22, substantially as described. to be adjusted laterally thereon, of a swivel frame or board 22 held in the U-shaped frame 5 by thumb screws 21 passing through the Witnesses:
OSCAR NELSON.
