Description

No. 805,074. PATENTED NOV. 21, 1905. G. E. KEMP.
INVALIDS TABLE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.12. 1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE.
CHARLES EUGENE KEMP, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO LYCOMING SPECIALTY COMPANY, OF WVILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
INVALIDS TABLE.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed August 12, 1904. Serial No. 220,510.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs EUGENE KEMP, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Williamsport, county of Lycoming, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalids Tables, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the table complete, showing the position in which it lies when it is adjusted for use on one of the headposts of a bedstead. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the table detached. Fig. 3 is a detailed ver tical section of the adjustable clamp, and Fig. I a plan view of the lower part of the clamp.
The object of this invention is to render the device extremely simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time to provide for desirable adjustment of the table-board, so that it may be brought into convenient position for use of an invalid while lying in bed, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the form of the apparatus illustrated in the drawings, which is the preferred form, the main supporting-arm a is cast in a single piece T shape in cross-section. Its inner end is provided with a vertical angle-plate b, in which is pivotally mounted a clamp arm or plate 0, whereby the device may be readily attached to and detached from a bedpost or other support. On the outer end of the arm is formed a cup or socket (Z, which is substantially hemispherical in shape and whose inner or bearing surface is described on a circle Whose center is above the upper surface of the arm. In
face of this socket member being located below the plane of the arm. Rising centrally in this socket member is a circular boss it, through which a central bolt-hole is formed. The two members are secured together by a vertical bolt e', which passes through said central hole and through the slot in the cup. The lower end of this bolt is headed, and the upper end is threaded and provided with a thumb-nut j, which lies within the cup 9, where it will be not only accessible, but also out of the way, where it will be the least likely to catch in the bedclothing and wearing-apparel.
With the above-described connection between the two members of the bracket it will be observed that the table-board will have a practically universal adjustment, except that When it is swung around so that its supporting-arm shall lie at right angles to the main arm it will only be permitted to have a tilting adjustment forward and backward and not sidewise, this limitation as to adjustment in this position being caused by the arrangement of the slot in line with the length of the main arm.
It will be observed also that by dropping the socket part on the table-arm below the plane of the arm the table and arm may swing freely without interfering with the main supporting-arm, this being a'desirable feature in that it permits the table-board to be swung or folded over the main supporting-arm when it is not in actual use by the invalid.
It will be observed that my device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction and that it provides for all the necessary or desirable adjustment of a device of this sort.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In adevice of the character described, the combination of a main arm provided at one end with means for adjustment to a support and at its other end with a cup, said cup being slotted in line with the arm, a table-supporting member having a socket formed at its outer end adapted to fit and turn Within the cup on the main member and provided witha central bolt-hole, and a clamp-bolt extending up through the slot and hole in the cup and socket and provided with means for clamping the parts in their adjusted position, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main arm provided at one end with means for adjustment to a support and at its other end with a cup, said cup being slotted in line with the arm and having its concave bearing-surface below the plane of the arm, and a table-supporting arm having a socket formed at its outer end, said socket being adapted to fit and turn within the cup and having its under bearing-surface arranged below the plane of the arm, a clamp-bolt extending up through the slot and a hole in the center of the socket and provided at its upper end with a clamp-nut.
3. In adevice of the character described, the combination of a main arm provided at one end with means for adjustment to a support and at its other end with a slotted cup, a tablesupporting member having a cup socket
