SWINGING TRAY.

Application filed April 19, 1918.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VERNER M. GAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swinging Trays, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to furniture, and more especially to vertically adjustable bracketsupported holders; and the object of the same is to produce a tray or stand,

and a peculiar form of support therefor which may be attached to the side rail of a bed or the arm of a chair or the like.

A further obj ect is to provide such adj ustment as may be need-ed in the use of this article.

Other objects will appear in the following specification, and reference is made to the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a. side elevation of the device attached to any horizontal piece of furniture,

The piece of furniture here indicated. at F may be the side rail of a bed, the arm of a chair, or some other horizontal element to which it is desired to attach this device. The latter consists essentially of a tray or support, a bracket for holding it, and a mount for the bracket, the mount being so constructed that it is attachable to the piece of furniture by means which permit it to be used when desired, adjusted when in place, and removed when 'the need for it is no longer felt.

The bracket is substantially right angular. It has a horizontal arm 1 which is preferably square or at any rate is not round, an upright arm 2 whereof the lower portion at least is round as shown, and. a brace 3 uniting the meeting ends of these arms and giving them strength. This element is preferably made of metal.

The tray 4 is a small and fiat table having eyes 5 beneath it slidably mounted on the horizontal arm 1 so that it may be adjusted laterally in a manner described below. This element is preferably of wood, and may be of an appropriate size to support the articles which are to be carried by the entire device.

However, I do not wish to be limited to proportions and materials of parts, and I am merely giving my preference.

The mount consists of several minor elements. A substantially U-shaped yoke 10 is provided, preferably of metal and rather rigid, its upper leaf having a hole 11 through which the rounded lower end of the arm 2 projects, its lower leaf having a similar hole 12 directly beneath that numbered 11, and its upright leaf 13 connecting the outer edges of the two leaves mentioned. The upper leaf is by preference wider than the lower, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to overlie the article F of furniture, and secured beneath this leaf is a transverse cleat 14 which is to lie against the outside face of said piece of furniture and he held in place by clamps such as those numbered 15. The upright arm 2 of the bracket passes down through the holes 11 and 12, and upon this arm is fastened a washer 16, preferably by means of a set screw 17, the latter resting upon the lower leaf and sustaining the thrust of the bracket when weight is thrown onto the same. The lower leaf also has beneath it a lug 18 through which is threaded a set screw 19 whose tip bears against the shank of the upright arm 2 beneath the low-er leaf and when this set screw is set. up tight the shank cannot rotate. When it is loosened, the shank and the entire bracket may turn, the washer turning with it in a manner which will be clear. When the set screw 17 of the washer is loosened, the shank may be adjusted vertieally. Obviously the clamps are removed and the entire mount detached from the piece of furniture F, in a manner which is clear and in the present instance by retracting the set screws of the clamps themselves although I do not wish to be limited to the employment of this particular clamp.

An article of this kind may be attached to the side rail of a. bed or crib, especially when the latter contains an invalid, and the bracket may be properly adjusted and then swung in the mount so as to bring its horizontal arm and especially its tray 4 in front of the invalid for supporting dishes, books, toys and the like. Also it is quite obvious that this device may be mounted on the arm of a chair or other horizontal piece of furniture F, and its use will depend to a large extent on the furniture to which it is attached and the conditions surrounding its employment.

The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a device of the class described, the combination with a right-angular bracket whose upright arm is round and whose horizontal arm is angular, and a tray having),- eyes with angular openings slidably mounted on said angular arm; of a mount of substantially U- shaped cross section whose upper and lower leaves are provided with alined round holes tor the upright arm of said bracket and whose lower leaf has a lug; depending alongside its hole, a set screw through the lug against said upright arm, a washer adjustably mounted on said arm above the lower leaf, a horizontal cleat secured beneath the upper leaf alongside its hole, and a pair of clips for fastening said cleat to a piece of furniture.
