TABLE ATTACHMENT FOR BEDSTEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
Application filed February 21, 1916, Serial No. 79,748. RenewedDecember 18, 1919. Serial No. 345,913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM L. HAn'r- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palmyra, in the county of Harrison, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Table Attachment for Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for bedsteads and the like, and particularly refers to a table appliance designed for use in connection with either the head or foot board.
-One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved, simple, efficient and practical attachment for use in connection with the head or footboard of a bed, in order to be used as a game, or sewing table, or as a garment supporting table, while a person has retired for the night, and which constitutes a panel for the head. or footboard when closed, and is so constructed as to present neat appearance, and at,the same time capable of readydispoeition for convenient use in the mannerset forth.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a bedstead showing table attachments at the head and the foot of the bed.
Fig, 2 is a detail View of a portion of the foot of the bed, showing parts in section, and showing a table attachment as applied.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of a portion of a head of a bed, showing another form of means for adjustably connecting the table attachment thereto, and illustrating parts in section.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view through one of the posts of the head of the bed, illustrating the means for holding the table attachment in different positions.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view through the joint of the link for supporting the table attachment at the foot of the bed when in use.
Referring more especially to the drawings, l designates the posts of the footboard and 2 designates the posts of the head board of a bedstead. A footboard 3 (which also constitutes a table attachment) is provided, and secured b suitable screws 1 in the recesses 5 of the end edges of the footboard or tale attachment are plates 6, which are provided with pins 7 pivoted in bearings of the posts 1 axially, whereby the table attachment or footboard may be swung to a vertical position or horizontal position. Embedded in the under face of the footboard or table attachment adjacent both ends, by means of screwsS are plates 9 having ears 10. Pivotally connected to the ear 10 by means of a suitable rivet 11 is a supporting link 12. Pivoted to the adjacent sides of the posts 1 by means of the pins 13 are supporting links 14. The adjacent ends of each set of links 12 and 14 are pivotally united by the pin 15. One end of each pin 15 is provided with a rectangular head 16, which is beveled, and is counterunk in the inner face of the link 12, thereby preventing the pin 15 from rotating in the link 12. The other end portion (which is provided with threads 17) passes through an opening 18 of the link .14, and has threaded thereon a nut 19, the tightening of which will hold the links firmly in alinement, or angularly with relation to each Other, to support the table or footboard, which may be used as heretofore set forth. The headboard 20 has embedded in a recess 21 of one end edge thereof a plate 22, secured in place by screws 23. This plate 22 has a pin, which is pivotally mounted in one of the side posts 2 of the head of the bed. Secured by screws 24: in a recess 25 of the opposite end edge of the head board or table at'achment is a circular plate 26, which is provided with a plurality of apertures 27 annularly arranged. The plate 26 is supplied with a pin 28, which is arranged axially with the pin 29 of the plate 22, which pin 28 mounted in a bearing of the adjacent post 2 of the head of the bed. so
' that tl e head board or table attachment 20 may be adjusted at different angles. It is to be noted that the posts 2 are hollow, and diametrically opposite sides of the wall of one of the posts 2 are supplied with apertures 30 and 31. The aperture 31 is larger than the aperture 80, and is threaded, to receive the reduced threaded part of the plug 32. A detent pin 33 is uided in the plug 32 and is supplied with a thumb engaging" head 341-. The pin has a'transverse abutment pin 35, between which and the inner end of the plug 32 a coil spring 36 is interposed. It is to be noted that the pin 35 is just long enough to pass endwise through the aperture 31. The detent pin 33 is first 'mounted in the plug 32, after which the pin 35 is disposed transversely of thepin 33, the spring 36 having first been coiled about the pin 33. The; pin 33 is then passed 7 through the apertures 31 and 30, so that the plug 32*may be screwed into the aperture 31, whereby the extremity of the detentpin 33 may engage any one of the plurality of apertures 27, so as to hold the head board or table attachment in different adjusted positions. For instance, the table attach- V ment may be adjusted to and held in a horiizontal position, or an inclined or slanting position, to afford a back rest, or may be disposed in a vertical position. When the table attachment or head board is utilized to support garments or the like, while personshave retired, the head of-the bed is provided with ahead section consisting of the transverse and the vertical rods 37 and .38, to support the bolster or pillows. W'hen the table attachment or head board is disposed in an inclined pos1t1on, tobe used as a head rest, a bolster or one ortwo pillows may be disposed to the rear of the table section or head board 20 against the head section, then additional pillows maybe disposed forward of the table section or head board 20, so that the occupant of the bed may sit in an inclined pos1t1on thereagainst. The invention having been set forth,
what is claimed as new and useful is:
A table attachment, comprising in combll ldlllOll with a rectangular tubular arch I frame for the end of a bedstead, a table board constituting a, panel for said frame,
the opposite end :edges of said board or )anel havin elon ated recesses lates secured in said recesses and provided with axially alined trunnion pins, the opposite tubular sides of said frame having axially alined bearings in which said trunnion pins are rotatably mounted, whereby the board or panel may be disposed perpendicularly, horizontally, or at various intermediate angles, one of said plates being circular and having a plurality of apertures annularlv arranged, one'ofthe tubular sides of the frame having apertures diametrically opposed having the same axis to aline axially with any one of the apertures of said circular plate as it is rotated, one of the apertures of the tubular side being formed in the outer portion of the wall of the side and larger than the other diametrically opposite. aperture, a plug detachably'threaded \in the larger aperture, a detent pin movably .which is removable, whereby the detent pin and its attendant parts may be detached:
from the side of said frame.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM L. I-IARTMAN.
