ADJUSTABLE IBEDSIIDE SURGICAL TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 16, 1917.
Application filed October 24, 1916. Serial No. 127,370.
1 h aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Brencoa O. GORTON, acitizen of the United States, residing at lVaterproof, in the parish of Tensas and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bedside Surgical Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others slilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to surgical tables,
and the primary object of the invention is to provide a table including a pair of adjustable standards, to the upper ends of which is pivotally connected a table top or board, one edge of which is adapted to rest upon the edge of a bed, when the table is in use Another object of this invention is to slidably attach stirrups to the under surface of the table and to provide means for limiting the outward movement of the stirrups.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and claimed in describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved table showing one edge of the pivoted top resting upon the edge of a bed.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the tabie illustrating parts in section.
3 is a bottom plan view of the pivoted table top.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig, 8, and
Fig. 5 is a detail view of a modified form of the adjustable standards.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 designates an ordinary bed, such as is used in a hospital, and 2 generically indicates the adjustable surgical table.
The table structure 2 includes a pair of supporting standards 3. Each of the standards 3 comprises a vertical hollow base section 4 having legs 5 connected thereto and extending outwardly therefrom clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. A suitable brace rod 6 extends from one of the standards 8 to the other, a short distance upwardly from their lower ends for bracing the standards.
Each of the standards comprises an upper section 7, which is telescopically mounted in the hollow section i and held in adjusted position by means of a thumb screw 8. The upper telescoped sections 7 are provided with enlarged heads 9 inwhich are formed central openings 10.
The table proper, or the table top 11 is composed of a flat board which has one edge inserted through a slot 12 formed in a tube 13. The ends of the tube 13 are preferably rounded as shown at 14, and they project beyond the edges of the table top 11 to allow the rod to be pivotally mounted in the opening 10, for pivotally connecting the table top 11 to the standards 0. Cotter pins or analogous devices 15 are inserted through the ends of the tube 13 for preventing accidental endwise movement of the tube in the bearing openings 10.
The table top 11 has a plurality of straps 16 arranged in pairs and attached to its under surface which straps form supports and guides for substantially U-shaped stirrups 17. The stirrups 17 are adapted for extending laterally from the side edges of the table top, and they have knobs 18 formed upon the outer surfaces of their inner ends for engagement with the innermost strap of each pair for limiting the outward slidable movement of the stirrups.
When the table is in use, the free edge of the table top 11 is rested upon the edge of the bed 1, and the standards 3 are placed outwardly therefrom as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The table top 11 resting upon the edge of the bed will, move in unison with movement of the bed, mattress and springs, and materially add to the comfort of the patient being operated upon.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing, a modified form of the standards is provided, which comprises lower sections 20 and upper sections 21 which are telescopically mounted in the lower sections 20. The lower sections 20 are provided with vertical slots 22, and a plurality of downwardly extending angularly disposed recesses 23 which communicats with the vertical slots 22. The telescoped upper section 21 of the modified form of the standard has 2e-eateading therethrough which is adapted for seating in any one of the plurality of angularly disposed recesses 23 for Supporting the upper end of the upper section 21 at various elevations. The upper telescoped section 21 is provided With an opening 25 which receives and pivotally supports the ends of the tube 13.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended Within the scope of What is claimed.
What is claimed is In a surgical table, a supporting structure including a pair of standards, each of said standards including base members and upper memberstelescopically mounted in said base members, means for holding said members being PIOYlClQCl with circular openings formed in their upper ends, a table board, a tube attached to one elge of said table board and having its ends rotatably seated in said openings, said table board be ing adapted to have its free edge rest upon the edge of a bed, stirrups slidably attached to the under surface of said table board, and means for limiting the slidable movement of said stirrups.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signaturein presence of two Witnessesv REBECCA C. GORTON.
