TABLE ATTACHMENT FOR BEDSTEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 16, 1909.
Original application filed December 17, 1907, Serial No. 406,844. Divided and this application filed October 12, 1908.
Serial No. 457,230.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY E. Cownnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, Calhoun county, State of Georgia, have invented an Improvement in Table Attachments for Bedstcads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved attachment for bedsteads and cribs for supporting a table over the bed.
The details of construction, arrangement, and combination. of parts are as hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved attachment applied to a bedstead. Fig. 2 is a. vertical section of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clamp adapted for application to a bedstead.
A indicates a clamp, B a socket bar or rod forming a portion of said clamp and serving as a support for a vertically adjustable table C. The clamp proper comprises a. vertical bar 1 having its upper end curved laterally and provided with a slot and clamp-screw 2, and a slotted bar 3 having a clamp-screw 4. A third clamp-screw 5 is applied to the bar 1 near its upper end. The rod B, which supports the table, passes through the slots in the bars 1 and 8 and the screws 2 and 4 bear thereon. The bedstead rail passes between the parts 1 and B, and the clamp secures the rod B firmly in vertical position, as will be readily understood. The leaf 6 of the table is hinged at 7 to a horizontal strip 8 which is riveted to a flanged tube 9 adapted to slide and rotate on the rod B and may be locked by a clamp-screw 10 to prevent the table from rotation. The tube 9 forming thus a permanent attachment of the table proper, is supported upon a collar 11 which is slidable on the rod B and provided with a clamp-screw 12 by which it may be secured in any vertical adjustment.
When not in use, the hinged portion 6 of the table hangs pendent as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2, but when extended in horizontal position as in Figs. 1, 2, 3, it is supported by braces 13 which are hinged at 14. to the tube 9 and are detachably connected at their upper ends with eyed brackets 15 se cured to the table leaf 6. The upper ends of the braces 13 are bent laterally in opposite directions and pass through the eyes of brackets 15 and may be secured by spring catches, or other suitable device.
I thus provide a table attachment which may be readily applied to, or removed from bedsteads, cots, and cribs and may be easily adjusted higher or lower as required by conditions.
In order to remove the attachment, it is only necessary to loosen the clamp-screws 2 and 4, which will release the rod B from the clamp proper.
The lower portion of the rod B is flattened on the inner side and covered with felt or rubber for the purpose of preventing marring the polished surface of the bed rail. In practice, the upper end of the rod will be constructed with a socket to adapt it for reception of a support for a mosquito bar attachment (not shown).
This application is a division of application Serial No. 4063M, allowed July 17, 1908.
What I claim is:
1. The improved table attachment comprising a clamp, a. vertical bar adapted to be secured by said clamp, a tube adapted to slide and rotate on said rod, and means for securing it in any required adjustment; a table leaf hinged to the upper portion of such tube, and a hinged support for such leaf, the same being detachably connected whereby the leaf is adapted to be lowered when required, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the vertical rod and means forsecuring it to a support, of a tube adapted to slide and rotate on said rod, a horizontal strip fixed on the upper end of the tube, a table-leaf hinged to such strip, hinged braces detachably connected with the table leaf for supporting it in horizontal position, a clamp-screw a plied to said tube for preventing rotation of the leafsupportin rod, and a collar and clampscrew applied to the rod for supporting the tube and the table attachment in any vertical adjustment, substantially as described.
