JAMES T. Roma, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
LIGHTING-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Paton-ted Aug. 12,1913.
Application filed January 10, 1913. Serial no. 741,224.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. ROBB, a subject of the King of Great Britain, anda resident of'the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of -Kings and State of New York, have inventeda' new and Improved Lighting-Fixture, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact deto provide a lighting fixture for the stated which shall be easily adjusted in order tobring it to the best possible position for use, the construction and arrangement being such that very simple structures are provided. j
A further object'of the invention, and a I more specific object thereof, is the provision of clamps intended to' cooperate with lamp sockets, whereby the lamp carried by the socket may be advantageously positioned on the headboard of the bed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in whichand showing a second form of fixture.
Figure 1 ,is a side view of one form of fixture, one of the members of the headboard of the bed being shown in section; Fig. 2
is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Flg. 1; while Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, one of the members of the headboard'of the bed, generally of the metal type, is designated 1, the lamp being positioned in a socket 2 which carries a shade 3, the socket being adjustable relatively to the headboard, and adapted to be carried thereby through the medium of the clamp to be now described. i
The clamp comprises'two jaws 45 pivotally united at 6, a spring 7 extending around the pivotal mounting and engaging the jaws, whereby they maybe securely held in position on the member 1, as shown in Fig. 1. In order to prevent scratching or injury to the said member the insides of the jaws are preferably provided with a relatively soft material 8, also adapted to act as an insulator. In order to provide for easy manipulation of the jaws 4.5 each of them is preferably provided with a rearwardly extendin ortion 9, which portions collectively form handles, so that by pressing the handles together the jaws will be released, thereby permitting the lamp to be moved to various positions on the said member 1. On the outer side of the jaw 5 'is a bracket 10, having the spaced side portions 11, and between these slde portions is a substantially similarly shaped member 12 having athneaded outer portion 13 with whioh the end of the socket 2 engages, a
"threaded-pin; 14 passing through the said sides 'll and the member 12, there being a winged'nut 15 on the pin so that by tightenmg the nut the frictlonal engagement be- ;tween the sides 11 and member 12 will serve to hold the socket and lamp in desirable position relatively tothe clamp; if so desired, the adjacent faces of the said sides and member 12 may be serrated, as at 16-. It will be noted that the intermediate portion of the said member 12 is removed, whereby a passageway 17 is provided through which the leading-in wires 18 to the lamp are passed.
Referring particularly to Fig. 3, wherein the socket 2 and shade 3 are illustrated, a
different form of clamp is set forth, the jaws 4 5.. of which are curved, being thereby especially'adapted to engage the members 1 of headboards, which members are substantially cylindrical. with the handles 9 to-permit their manipulation, and the spring 7 is also retained as a means of keeping the jaws in engagement with the said member 1. Carried by the jaw 5 is an offset 19, having a curved passageway 20 extending therein, the outer end of the ofiset being threaded as at 21 for engagement with the said socket 2, the passageway 20 afi'ording convenient entrance The jaws are provided for the wires conducting current to the lamp.
The fixtures shown are simple in construction, and have been especially devised for use on the headboards of hospital beds; the material of which the fixtures are made may, of" course, be widely varied in order to meet different environments, the size of the parts being also'capable of modification in order to adapt the fixtures to different beds.
Having thus described invention, What i: cinim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is in a device of the character described 2t pair of pivotslly mounted clamping jaws, an upstanding member projecting from one of said jaws, e pivota ily mounted lamp-supporting member arranged on said upstanding member, and means for pivotslly connecting said 1amp-supp0rting member with said upstanding member said lamp-sup ing member being formed with s centred i o'ro eee aperture extending for the full length thereoi for i'eceivlng and guarding iescung-in wlres to sale lamp, and securing means r01 receiving and securing a lamp in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
