To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, dVILLIAM T RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vellesley, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Portable Lamp-Guard, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to aportabl'e handguard for electric lamps.

The principal objects of the invention are to rovide a device of this kind, having a handle through which the conducting wires may pass and means for supporting an incandescent lamp, with a guard of a convenient and simple form, and with means for shading the eyes of the user and reflecting the light in the desired direction; to provide for conveniently attaching the guard to the handle so that it may be removable therefrom;- to provide a simple and efiicient manner of-mounting the reflector on the guard, and to so construct the device as to increase its utility and simplicity as will appear hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings which illustrate two forms in which the invention maybe embodied, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portable lamp guard of one form. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is aside elevation of a elevation of another form of the invention.

In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 a hollow handle 10 is used through which the conducting wires 11 for the lamp may pass. The lamp may be of any desired construction, and the handle is provided with a screw 13 on which a socket 14 for the lamp may be removably mounted. Atthe end of the handle adjacent to the socket is a clamping ring 15 havin ears 16 thereon through which passes a bo t 17 or any other convenicnt fastening device. This collar supports the guard frame which in this form consists of a serles of longitudinal wires 19 secured at their ends to the clampingring 15 and extending outwardly therefrom in such a manner as to form a conical end and a 'substantially cylindrical body for the guard frame. 20 and 21. The spreading rings 20 are comparatively lar e in cross section and are located inside the longitudinal wires. They may be soldered to them if desired. The rings 21 are smaller,

22 and 23. The offsets 22" extend outwardly to receive the rings 20 andthe offsets 23 extend inwardly to receive the rings 21.

At the end the guard is provided with an end ring 24.- to which the ends of the longi tudinal wires are secured. This forms an open end which serves as a base on which the guard may be set on a level surface, and also serves as an opening through which the lamp may be inserted in-or removed from the frame without moving any of the parts thereof. The guard is preferably pro- I vided with a hook 25 by means of which it. may be sus nded. This hook is shown in the form 0 a single'piece of wire havin two legs engaging one of the rings 20 and held in position by a clampin wire 26. It is located near the end of the frame and extends outwardly to one side thereof so that it does not interfere with the setting of the guard on its end as indicated-above.

The device in the form described above can be used in a general way for the purpose intended, but in order to protect the users eyes from the strong light of the lamp, and to direct the rays of the light toward the object being inspected, a reflector or shade 27 is placed on the device. This reflector or shade is preferably mounted inside the frame of the guard and may be, secured to the guard itself by soldering it to the longitudinal wires as indicated. The reflector or shade is made in two parts; a cylindrical part which extends throughout the main part of the length of the body of the frame and covers about half the circumference thereof, and a conical part 28 which covers the inside of the conical end of the frame which has been described.

It willv be seen that the whole frame of the guard including the shade can be readily means of clips 31 or the like, and in this case,

a second conical end 32 is provided in place of the open end of the guard descr bed above. it will be seen that when the guard is placed in position With thelan1p-inside, one

of the clips has to be detached in order that the main body of the guard may be swung away from the conical end before the lamp may be removed. in this case the reflector or shade 27 is made in the same form as before, but its conical end is located at the outer end of the frame instead'of at the inner end, and serves the same purposes. In this case also a book 33 is employed, but it extends directly out from the end of the frame, This guard is also preferably provided With spring Wires 3% inside the same to assist in holding the lamp in position.

While I have illustrated and described two forms in Which'the invention conveniently may be embodied, I am aware that many other modifications may be made Without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not Wish to be limited to the particular forms shown, but i l/Vhat I do claim is 1. As'an article of manufacture, a portable lamp-guard comprisin a handle, a Wire frame mounted at one en thereon having an open ring at the, end opposite the handie, continuous longitudinal Wires extending from said end ring to the handle, and means one yea for holding said longitudinal Wires in position, a shade or reflector mounted on said 2. As an article of manufacture, a portable lamp guard comprising a handle having means on the end thereof for supporting a lamp, a metal frame removably clamped on the end of the handle in position to=surround the lamp, and having an open end ring, a main cylindrical portion, a conical portion at thehandle end thereof, and a reverse hook on the end of the frame at one side thereof near said end ring and located entirely between said end ring and the handle, whereby the guard may be set in upright position on the end ring as a base or hung in the opposite position from saidhook.

3. As an article of manufacture, a portable lamp guard comprising a handle having means on the e'nd'thereof for supporting a lamp, a metal frame on the end of the handle in position to surround the lamp, andhaving an open end ring, and a reverse hook on theend of the frame at one side thereof near said end ring and located entirely between said end ring and the handle, whereby the guard may be set in upright position on the end ring as a base or hung in the opposite position from said hook.
