Description
G. F. SOUTHWORTH. ELECTRIC LIGHT-BULB CHANGER.
APPLICATION IILED FEB. 13, 1908.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
CHARLES F. SOUTHWORTH, O F CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
ELEGTRIC-LIGHT-BULB CHANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Application filed February 13, 1908. Serial No. 415,654.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SOUTH- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cambridge, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Electric-Light- .Bulb Changers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts.
. This invention relates to a device to be used in holding incandescent electric lamp bulbs while being put in position or while being removed from position when the bulbs are so located as to be out of reach.
The feature of the invention resides in the means for gripping and holding the bulb firmly and without injury thereto.
The invention will more fully appear from the accompanying description and drawings, and will be particularly pointed out in the claims. W
The drawings represent the preferred form of the device.
Figure 1 represents a device the invention in side elevation and partially in cross-section, ,and shown as gripping a bulb of an electric incandescent lamp. Fig. 2 is a .top plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1. The device comprises two parts, a base and a rim. In the specific embodiment illus- .trated theseparts areshown as made separately of different materials attached together, but the invention-is not limlted to such a construction.
In the drawings, the base is shown as of cup-shape formed out-of wood or similar material and provided with an aperture for the reception of a suitable handle B by which the device is manipulated. The base A is slotted at 0 around its periphery. The rim is extended above the base and is continuous, elastic and annular. 'These qualities are preferably secured by the use of a rubber compound, and the rim is preferably made as a continuous cylinder D fitting in the annular slot 0 and projecting upwardly therefrom.
The action of the rim is greatly improved by beveling upwardly its inner surface, as shown at d, and providing a continuous series of longitudinal corrugations e on the'mner surface of the rim.
In use the device is slipped over the bulb of the lamp, represented at E, the continuous,
therefrom and provide elastic annular rim expanding as it rides up on the bulb, and acting to grip the bulb firmly as a result of its inherent characteristics. It is impossible to injure the bulb by the use of the device, but the grip/upon the bulb is so firm and secure that the bulb may readily be placed in position or removed therefrom. The corrugations increase the elastic character of. the rim, facilitate the slipping of the device on to and ofi from the bulb longitudinally, and secure a firm grip upon the bulb for the rotary motion which is necessary in placing the bulb in or removing it from its socket.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: r
1. An electric light bulb changer, comprising a base for attachment to a handle, an extended, continuous, elastic, annular rim projecting from said base, provided on its inner surface with longitudinal corrugations and adapted to slip over and grip the bulb to Y allow of its placement or removal. embodying 2. An electric light bulb changer, comprisin a base for attachment to a handle, a cylin er of rubber projecting upwardly from said base and provided on its interior surface with longitudinal corrugations, whereby it is adapted to slip over and grip the bulb to al low of its lacement or removal.
3. Anfe eotric light bulb changer, comprising a base for attachment to a handle, a cylinder of rubber projectin from said base, beveled on its interior sur ace and provided thereon with longitudinal corrugations, whereby it is adapted to sli over and grip the bulb to allow of its p acement or removal.
4. An electric light bulb changer, comprising'a cup-shaped base adapted to be attached to a handle and provided with an annular slot at its peri hery,-a cylinder of rubber fitting in said s 0t and (projecting upwardly on its inner surface with longitudinal corrugations, whereby it is adapted to slip over and grip the bulb to allow of its placement or removal.
In testlmony whereof, I have'signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' CHARLES F. SOUTHWORTH. Witnesses:
' MABEL PARTELOW, EMILY 0. Honens.
