ELECTRIC DISPLAY-LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,296, dated July 1]., 1905.

Be it known that I, HENRY J. GILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Display-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in electric display-lamps, its object being particularly to provide a simple and convenient removable cap for the ordinary incandescent lamp, so that caps of any desired colors may be used.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary incandescent lamp fitted with my improved invention, partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view turned at right angles with Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View looking toward the base of a lamp, and Fig. 4 is a detail of the cap.
In the drawings, A represents an ordinary incandescent lamp.
B represents a cap made of colored glass or similar material and shaped to fit over the tip end of the lamp-bulb. The cap B is provided along its free edge with an outwardlyturned flange 2. In order to hold the cap B upon the lamp, I provide the spring-holder C, consisting of a pair of spring-arms 3 outwardly curved at their free ends 4: to fit around the opposite sides of the lamp-bulb, the connected portions 5 of the spring-arms fitting over the opposite sides of the flange 2. The flange 2 is formed with on t-away portions 6 to accommodate the spring-holder, as illustrated.
In use a cap of any desired color is arranged in connection with the lamp, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the spring-holder engaging with the lamp-bulb and firmly holding the cap in position. When it is desired to substitute a differently-colored cap, the spring-holder can be sprung out of engagement with the cap and arranged in connection witha new cap. A single holder may thus be used in connection with an indefinite number of caps. By having the cap cover only the tip end of the lamp the bulb intermediate of the cap and base is uncovered, so as to throw unobstructed rays against the display-surface upon which the lamps are secured.
In Figs. 2 and 3 the cap is shown formed with a central opening 7, through which projects the tip of the lamp-bulb.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with an incandescent lamp, of a cap covering the tip end thereof, and a spring device arranged to hold said cap upon the lamp, said device having detachable spring support upon the free edge of the cap.
2. The combination with an incandescent lamp, of a cap fitted to the tip end of the lamp, an outwardly -projecting flange carried by said cap, and a spring device for holding said cap upon the lamp, said device being supported upon said cap by means of said flange.
3. The combination with an incandescent lamp, of a cap fitted to the tip end of the lamp, the free edge of said cap standing intermediate of the largest diameter of the lampand its tip, and a spring device for holding said cap upon the lamp, said device being supported upon the free edge of said cap and being of suflicient length to pass inwardly past the largest portion in cross-section of the lamp.
4. The combination with an incandescent lamp, of a cap fitted to the tip end of the lamp, an outwardly-projecting flange carried by said cap, and a spring-holder fitted over said flange and formed with a pair of arms to embrace the lamp-bulb.
