ELECTRIC-LIGHT FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
7 atented Feb. 21, .1911.
Application filed December 23. 1910. Serial No. 598.973.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PlNoUs 13mm .11, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York. in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IJlectric-llight Fixtures. of which the following is a specificationasnch as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to mal and use the same.
This invention relates particularly to at tachahle and detachable metal shade holders for incandescent electric lamp sockets and especially to the means tor connecting the shade holder with said sockets. the object being to provide a simple and ett'ective device o't this class which may be easily and conveniently manipulated both in attaching and detaching the shade holder.
The invention is fully disclosed in the to]- lowing specification. of which the accom panying drawing terms a part. in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable re't'erence clmracters in each of the views. and in which;
Figure 1 is a side View showing an electric lamp socket with a shade holder connected therewith and suspended there'l'rom: Fig. 2 a sectional view of said parts and showing my improvement; and Fig. 3 a plan view of the shade holder detached From the socket and showing); my improvement.
In the drawing forming part of this specitication. l have shown at u an ordinarv electric lamp socket provided with a depending tubular member 1 said depending tubular member being provided. as shown in Fig. "l. with an annular head a". I have also shown at 7) an ordinary shade holder with which detachably connected a shade c. the general 'lcrm ot' said shade holder and the method of connecting the shade c therewith being the same as usual in this class of devices. and forming no part o't' my invention. The shade holder 7) is provided at the top thereot with an annular neck piece or hand b into which the downwardly directed tubular member ot' the lamp socket u is adapted to be inserted, and said down 'ardly directed tubular portion a" of the lamp socket (2 is of less diameter than the neck or band 7) of the shade holder 7). Passed through one side of said neck or band 71 of the shade holder 1) is a screw II. the inner end of which is rotatably connected with an arc-shaped tlat spring neck or band I and the length of which is approximately one hundred and eighty degrees. Directly opposite the screw (7. the neck or hand if of the shade holder is provided with an inwardly directed lug or projection j which, in the torm of construction shown. is Formed integrally with said neck or band. but which may he formed on or connected with said neck or band in any desired manner and at diametrically opposite points between the lug or projection f and the screw J, said neck or band is also provided with inwardly directed lugs or projections which also form keepers into and through which the ends of the spring c are movable. In the Form of construction shown. the keepers f consist of tongues formed on the top of the neck or band I) of the shade holder and bent inwardly and do'nniwardly. but said keepers maybe tormed on. or connected with. the neck or band I) in any desired manner. all that is necessary in thisv connection being that said keepers 'torm inwardly directed lugs or projections which operate in connection with the lug or projection f and the spring (1 to hold the shade holder in connection with the lamp socket u as hereinafter described.
"hen the screw (Z is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3, said position being the outermost position o't said screw, the downwardly directed tulmlar member of the lamp socket u may be inserted into the neck or band 7/ of the shade holder 7), as shown in Fig. and then by turning said screw (Z inwardly so that the spring c assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and in Full lines in Fig. 2, the said shade holder will be locked to the lamp socket. or to the part thereof as will be readily understood. and as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and when it is desired to detach the shade holder. all that is necessary is to turn the screw ll back into the position shown in full lines in l ig. 3. after which the shade holder may be easily detached from the lamp socket. as will be readily understood. It will also be seen that with my improvement the shade holder is supported concentrically on the lamp socket. or on the part thereof, said part (1 of the lamp socket when the shade holder is connected therewith being concentric in the neck or band 7f of the shade holder.
It will be understood that the screws in c placed within said the base portion of the shade holder serve to hold the shade c in connection therewith, but as these features form 110 part of my invention, they are not shown and described in detail. I also, in practice, preferably locate the screw (Z midway between two of the screws g, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, but this is not an essential element.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z 1. The herein described means for connecting a shade holder with a lamp socket, said socket being provided with a downwardly directed tubular member having an annular bead, and said shade holder being provided with a neck or band portion of greater diameter than said tubular member, consisting of a screw passed inwardly through one side of said neck or band portion, an inwardly directed lug or projection on said neck or band portion opposite said screw, and two inwardly directed lugs or projections on said neck or band portion at diametrically opposite points and between said screw and said first named lug or projection, said last named lugs or projections forming keepers, and a plate spring rotatably connected with the inner end of said screw and the ends of which are movable in and through said keepers.
2. The herein described means for securing a shade holder to a lamp socket and for centering said lamp socket in said shade holder, said lamp socket being provided with a downwardly directed tubular member having an annular bead, and said shade holder being provided in the top thereof with a neck or band portion, consisting of a plurality of inwardly directed lugs or project-ions on said neck or band, a screw passed inwardly through one side of said neck or band midway between two of said lugs or projections, said two lugs or projections being adapted to serve as keepers, and a plate spring rotatably connected with the inner end of said screw and the ends of which are movable in and through said keepers.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 22nd day of December 1910.
