This invention pertains generally to lighting fixtures, and more particularly to an improved adjustable form of light reflector holder for use with electric light bulbs ,of
different sizes.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, sturdy, adjustable form of holder bymeans of which a light reflec- A tor may be readily adjusted to different positions so as to properly focus it for use with various sizes and shapes of lamps to obtain the maximum lighting efficiency therefrom. To this end the holder is constructed in such a way that it may be at- 5 tached to the wall of a building, or like support, by either a peg and slot type, or a radially disposed screw-engaging type of attachment fitting. Both of such types are well known and commonly employed for this purpose. Consequently the number of fitting parts that need be carried by electrical supply shops for installing fixtures of this character is reduced.
A particular object is to provide a holder of the above described character adapted for use with the common beaded or flanged top forms of reflectors in which provision is made for supporting the reflector in the holder without the aid. of gripping screws This eliminates the possibility of the reflectors being broken due to the application of uneven pressures around their tops when they are clamped in the holders, or because of their falling from the holders due to the clamping screws being loosened by vibrations, as frequently occurs in the older forms of holders. i
A further object is to provide a simple, sturdy dependable reflector holder-embodying the above described features which is capable of being manufactured at a comparatively low cost. 7 a
These and other objects as well as the novel features and advantages of the invention will become more apparent when the following detailed description is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings of which Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a reflector holder or adapter constructed posed screw in accordance with this invention showing the reflector in full and dotted lines sup ported in two different positions; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the holder supporting housing; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the segmental reflector gripping member detached from the housing.
Referring now in detail to the single embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a substantially cylindrical fitting which forms the reflector-supporting housing proper of the holder, and which is adapted to fit over an ordinary electric light bulb and its socket indicated in dotted lines 2 in Fig. 2. About its top there is provided an inturned flange 8, having a pair of spaced key shaped slots 5, 5, formed therein, and an annular groove 4: adjacent thereto by means of which it is possible to attach the housing to a suitable support byeither a radially disgripping form of wall support fitting, such as is indicated by screws 6 and ring 7 in Fig. l, or the well known peg-andslot type of fitting.
For detachably gripping reflector 8, and adjustably supporting it on housing 1, a
segmental reflector engaging member 9 is employed. This member is preferably made up of three segments for the purpose of convenience in manipulation. The bot toms of these segments are all formed to PI'OVlCiG, a groove 11, formlng an annular shoulder around the gripping member 9 for engaging the bead or flange on the top of a reflector, while their upper portion is formed in the shape of a band 12 which rests against the outer wall of the housing. To yieldably hold the segments together, coil springs 13 are connected between brackets 14:. These springs permit the segments to be separated sufiiciently for the gripping member to be passed over the flange or bead on the top of a reflector and also draw them together with suflicient force to securely clamp the reflector in the holder. They also permit the gripping member to be expanded sufficiently to effect axial adjustment of the reflector on the housing.
In order to support the gripping memher 9 on the housing 1 in such a way that it may be readily adjusted to properly focus the reflector 8 with respect to the source of light regardless of the size and shape of the light bulbs, lugs 15 are formed on the center of the segments and extended radially inward, for en agement in annularly spaced openings 16 ormed in the side wall of housing 1. Hence all that need be done in order to focus the reflector is to expand the gripping member sufliciently to remove the lugs 15 from one set or row of openings 16 and raise or lower it until the lugs engage the row of openings nearest the position required to properly focus the reflector. As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, due to the fact that this holder may be attached to a wall or similar support by means of either of the two standard forms of wall support attachment fittings, the number of such fittings that need be carried by lighting fixture supply shops for use with holders of this character is reduced. Furthermore, a reflector holder constructed in accordance with this invention has the advantage that no screws are employed for clamping the reflector in the holder and hence no breakage is occasioned due to uneven screw pressure being applied to the fragile reflectors.
According to the provisions of the patent statutes, I have explained the principle and operation of my invention and have illustrated and described. What I now consider to represent its best embodiment. However,
I desire to have it understood that, within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically illustrated and described.
I claim: 7
1. A reflector holder comprising a housing adapted to fit over an electric light bulb and its socket, an annular segmental reflector gripping member mounted foraxial adjustment. upon saidhousing, and means yieldably joining the segments of said member together whereby a reflector may be .readily mounted and securely held therein.
2. A reflector holder comprising a housing adapted to fit over an electric light bulb and itssocket, and having anannular groove at its upper end for attaching it to a wall or similar support fitting, an annular segmental reflector gripping member mounted for axial adjustment upon said housing, and means for yieldably connecting the segments of said members together to provide 'for mounting and gripping a reflector therein.
3. A reflector holder comprising a housing adapted to fit over an electric light bulb and its. socket, and having an inwardly turned slotted flangeton its upper end and an annular'groove adjacent thereto for attaching it to a Wall or similar support fitting, an annular segmental reflector gripping member mounted for axial adjustment upon said housing, and yieldable means joining the segments of said member together to provide for mounting and clamping a reflector therein.
4. A reflector holder comprising a housing of substantially cylindrical shape adapted to fit over an electric light bulb and its socket and having a plurality of annular and axially spaced rows of openings in its side wall, an annular segmental reflector gripping member arranged for axial adjustment on said housing, a radially projecting lug upon each of the segments of said reflector gripping member arranged for detachable engagement in said wall openings for adjustably supportin said member on said housing, and means For yieldably holding the segments of the gripping member together in such a way as to permit mounting and securely holding a reflector therein and for permitting expansion thereof sufliciently to move said lugs from one row of the wall openings to another, so that a reflector held therein may be properly focused for use with different sizes of light bulbs.
5. A reflector holder comprising a housing of substantially cylindrical shape adapted to fit over an electric light bulb and its socket and having a plurality of annularly and axially spaced rows of openings in its side wall, an annular segmental reflector gripping member detachably mounted on said housing, each segment of said member being formed in the arc of a circle and having a lower grooved portion forming means for engaging the beaded or flanged top of. a reflector and an upper band portion adapted to engage the outer wall of the housing, a radially disposed lug being formed on and extending inwardly from each of said segments and adapted for engagement in said wall openings for adjustably supporting the reflector gripping member on the housing, and resilient means yieldably holding the segments of the gripping member together to permit fitting it on and gripping a reflector therein and also permitting expansion thereof to allow said lugs to be moved from one of said rows of openings to another to focus the reflector for use with different sizes of bulbs.
6. A reflector holder comprising a housing of substantially cylindrical shape adapted to fit over an electric light bulb and its socket, and having an inwardly turned slotted flange 'on its upper end and an annular groove adjacent thereto for attaching it to a Wall or similar support fitting, and a plurality of annularly and axially spaced rows of openings in its side wall, an annular segmental reflector gripping member detachably mounted for axial adjustment upon said housing, each segment of said member being formed with a lower grooved portion for engaging the beaded top of a reflector and an upper band portion adapted to engage the side Wall of the housing and each having a lug extending radially inwardly therefrom for engagement in said Wall openings for adjustably supporting the reflector gripping member on the housing, and yield'able means connecting the segments of the gripping member together in such a Way as to permit fitting of a reflector therein and axial adjustment thereof on the housing.
