Description

M. HERSKOVITZ. LAMP SHA'DE.
APPLICATION FlLEQ-OCT. 2. BIG.

MAX HERSKOVITZ, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LAMP-SHADE.
Application filed October 2, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, xx Hnnsnovrrz, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp -Shades, of which the 'lollowing is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to lamp shades and its object is to provide a lamp shade of simple c(mstruction, capable of being readily and easily attached to an electric lamp globe or other illuminating device. and held thereon at. various angles with respect to the longitudinal axis of the globe or device. An other object is to provide a holder for the shade, capable ot being readily secured to the shade, and held thereon by reason of its own elasticity, the shade and holder having coacting elements for detachably securing the one upon the other. Another object is to provide a shade -apable of being secured to the shade holders of the connnon and well known electric lighting fixture by means 0t screws, and also capable of being secured to an incandescent electric lamp globe by means of a holder embodying the present; in-
vention. l Vith these and other objects and advantages in view, this invention consists in the several novel 'l'eatures of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereafter fully set forth and clain'led.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a central, vertical section through a lamp shade containing the preferred embodiment of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder detached from the shade; Fig. 3 is a central, vertical section of a slightly modified form of the invention and Fig. l is a central, vertical section of another modified form of the invention.
lle'terring first to Figs. 1 and. 2, a lamp shade is illustrated, which may be constructed ot metal, glass or other desirable material, and in the preferred t'orm ot' the invention the shade is formed with an annular groove (3, on its inner face. 'hen the shade is formed of brass or other-sheet metal the groove is made by striking up the metal to form an outwardly projecting annular bead or rib and when formed of glass the shade may be blown or molded withthe bead to provide the annular groove The shade. may have a widely flaring shape as Specification of Letters Patent.

shown in Fig. 1 or any desirable shape may be used.
The holder 7, comprises a piece of wire, bent up as best shown in Fig. The middle portion of the wire is bent to form a circular or ring like base portion 8. of slightly greater diameter than that of tl annular groove (3. The two end portions of the tvire are bent at t), S), to lie in the plane of the circular base portion 8, as at 10, 10, and said portions; may extend approxinlately parallel with eap'lnother as shown. Beyond said portions lot it), the two ends of the wire are bent aroundlinto two approximately parallel, circular loops ll, 11, which extend approximately at right angles to the plane of the base portion 8. The two loops 11, 11., are spaced apart a sutlicient distance to permit them to he swung apart and clipped over the round end of an im-andescent electric light globe A as shown in Fig. 1.
The holder 7, is secured to the shade 5, by bringing the two arms 10,10 toward each other to thereby contract the circular base part 8, whereupon it may be inserted into the annular groove (5 and allowed to expand thereinto, the elasticity of the wire serving to distend the loop and securely hold it in place in the groove.
The arms 10, 10 serve as tlllClttlllS which the loops 11, 11, may be swung apart to fasten the device upon ail electric light globe, and the loops and arms may swing from the points 9, 5), so that very little effort is required to spread the loops apart. in applying the shade to an electric light globe or removing it tl'ieret'rom, although the loops of the holder act to tirmly hold the shade on a globe while permitting of adjustment of the shade to various positions on the globe. It is to be noted that when the loops are spread apart and placed on a globe, the circular base portion is thereby pressed firmly against the bottom of the groove, making it upon impossible for the shade to he accidentally detached from the holder.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 3 the shade member which corresponds to a portion of the shade 5, seen in Fig. 1, has a central opening 12, in its upper side and an annular seat 13, is formed above the bead, 6. The holder? may be termed in the same manner as the one shown in Figs. 1 and 2 if desired. This form of the invention may be used to support a silk shade. paper shade or a shade of other desired material, and lends itself particularly useful as a shade for candles. i
in the form shown in Fig. 4*. the shade 5" is formed with the annular head (3' near its smaller end to provide the groove for the reception of the holder 7*, and above said bead an outwardly flaring neck portion 1%, by means of which the shade may be secured to the ordinary electric light fixture (not shown) by the usual. screws employed in the shade holders of such fixtures and arranged to bear against the outer side of said flaring neck. \Vith this construction the shade may be used in connection with the holder 7 and may be supported by an electric lamp globe or it may be supported by the Shade holder of the electric light fixture as desired.
More or less variation of the details of construction are possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire therefore, not to limit: myself to the exact forms of construction shown and described, but intend, in the following claims, to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.
L I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a lamp shade comprising a shade having a top portion having an internal annular groove and a holder therefor, consisting of a piece of wire bent to form a base portion of circular form adapted to be secured in said groove by its own elasticity, the ends of said wire being bent into two approximately parallel bulb clasping' loops extending transversely of the plane of the base portion and substan-\ tially within the space occupied by' the shade, said loops being; capable of clasping an electric light bulb and holding the shade around the end thereof.
2. As a new article of lamp shade holder comprising: a having an internal annular groove and a piece of wire bent to foltti a base portion of circular form adapted to be secured in said groove by its own elasticity, the ends of said wire beingbent into two approximately parallel bulb clasping loops extending transversely of the plane. of the base portion and substantially within the space occupied by the shade. said loops being capable of clasping an electric light bulb and holding the shade around the end thereof.
