UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. RUSSELL, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS; MARY C. RUSSELL ADMIN ISTRATRIX OF SAID GEORGE A. RUSSELL, DECEASED.
LAMP-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed December 14, 1903. Serial No. 185,020.
-To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. RUssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Lamp-Protector, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of lamp protectors or guards which are adapted to be secured-upon the bulbs of incandescent electric lamps.
The especial object of this invention is to provide a protector or guard comprising a wire frame-work with a single set of spring fingers for supporting the guard in place upon the bulb. The spring fingers in the construction herein illustrated are connected to the closed end of the wire frame-work and extend toward the open end of the wire frame-work, so that they may be spread apart to receive the globe or bulb of an electric lamp when the protector is to be put in place thereon.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of an electric lamp protector or guard constructed according to this invention, and Fig. 2 is a view of an electric lamp bulb showing the engagement of the spring fingers therewith.
In the use of that class of guards or lamp protectors to which this invention relates it has been a matter of difliculty to provide a construction which is adapted for use on a variety of diiferent sizes and shapes of electric lamps. In an electric lamp protector constructed according to this invention, I employ a set of spring fingers which will center the guard or support upon the lamp bulb and which are sufliciently flexible to adapt themselves to a variety of shapes of lamps.
In a previous application for patent filed by me Nov. 9, 1903, Serial No. 180,294, I have shown and claimed a lamp guard in which two sets of spring fingers extend from the open end of the wire frame-work back into the body thereof. In this construction one set of spring fingers engages near the end of a lamp-globe and the other set of spring fingers engages the contracted or neck portion of the lamp-globe. In'a lamp guard constructed according to this invention, I employ a single set of spring fingers which extend in the opposite direction; that is to washer or center-ring 12.
say, in this construction, Iemploy a set of spring fingers which are secured in the frame-work so that the free ends of the spring fingers extend toward the open end of the wire frame-work.
Referring to the drawings and in detail, a lampguard constructed according to this invention, as herein illustrated, comprises an end ring 10. Extending from the ring 10 are frame wires 11 which are connected to a At different points the frame-Wires 10 may be connected by spreading rings. In the present construction, one spreading ring 13 is located sub stantially at the bend of the frame-wires 11, from which the ends of the wires are bent in to the center-ring 12, and two rings 14 and 15 are located close together and are secured in S-shaped bends of the frame-wires 10. The spring fingers which serve to hold the guard upon an electric lamp or bulb are soldered in place in the end-ring 12, or are otherwise secured so that their free ends are presented opposite the open end of the wire frame-. work. By means of this construction a single set of spring fingers will hold the framework in place upon the lamp. These fingers may be com aratively long and will be suiiiciently fiexi le to receive lamps of different shapes and to take up the jar of objects which might otherwise break the electric lam a Tiie lampguards or protectors constructed according to this invention are put intoplace by simply forcing the same onto electric lamps, and on this account, constructions of this kind can be much more readily put on and taken off than with the prior forms of construction in which the protecting framework is provided with a hinged section. In
addition to this by dispensing with the hinged hat I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. As an article of manufacture, a lamp guard comprising a frame-work having an open end and a substantially closed end and centering fingers for holding an electric lampglobe centrally in the frame, said centering fingers consisting of pieces of wire, each of which is fastened at one end to said closed end of the frame-work, and the rest of which is unattached, whereby the fingers can be sprung apart to receive the lamp.
2. As an article of manufacture, an electric lamp protector or guard comprising a wire frame-work consisting of a ring, an end- Washer, frame-wires connecting the ring and end washer, with spreading rings for holding the frame wires in place, and spring fingers secured to the end washer with their free ends extending toward the open end of the wire-frame.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE A. RUSSELL. Vitnesses:
PHILIP W. SoUTI-IGATE, CHARLES A. MERRILL.
