UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. YOUNG, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CANDLE-HOLDER FOR CHRISTMAS-TREES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,088,dated April 27, 1880.
Application filed January 14, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. YOUNG, of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candle-Holders for Christmas- Trees, which improvement is fully set forth in the followingspecitication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my device, showing the same applied to a tree. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my device. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same.
Similar letters indicate correspondingparts.
This invention relates to an improved candle-holder, consisting of a supportin g-rin g earryin g cups or holders for retaining the candles, said ring being provided with fastening devices for firmly holding the same in place.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a ring of wire. On this ring are supported cups B B, which are soldered or otherwise fastened to the same, and which receive the candles. Points or pins projecting from the supportingring A serve to hold the candles in place. This supporting-ringAis placed about the trunk O of the tree so that it rests on the branches thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. The wires or threads a a, one end of which is attached to the ring A, are then secured, by their other end,
to the trunk G of the tree, so as to steady the ring A and hold it in place. The wires or threads ca. may also befastened to the branches or twigs of the tree, or they may be replaced by clamps which grasp the branches firmly.
When the ring A is placed in position on the tree the candles are secured in the holders and forced down upon the pins, whereby they are not only held securely, but an even distribution oflights is secured, adding greatly to the attractiveness of the decoration.
Of course, the supporting-ring A may be shaped into an octagonal or other polygonal form without departing from the nature of my invention.
I do not claim the pin in the socket of the candle-holder, nor do I claim supporting a series of candlesticks on arms connected with a ring surrounding a gas-burner, as such is old and forms no part of my invention but Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A candle-holder for Christmas-trees, consisting of a ring having a series of sockets fixed thereto, each provided with a projecting pin for receiving and engaging with a candle, said ring carrying a series of wires or cords, with their free ends capable of being connected with the body or boughs of a tree, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of January, 1880.
