SHADE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Application filed February 25, 1910. Serial No. 545,892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I HARVEY HUBBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement 4 novel shade holder of which the following description in connection with the accompany'ing drawing is a specification, reference characters being used to indicate the several parts.
Figure .1 is an elevation partly broken away, showing my novel. shade holder as in use securing a shade to a lamp socket; Fig. 2 an elevation of' a standard lamp socket; Fig. 3 an elevation, partly broken away, of a threaded contractile collar detached; Fig. 4.2L. elevation, partly broken away, of a threaded inner or angle ring; and Fig. 5 is an elevation, partly broken away, of a threaded outer or U-ring.
10 denotes an ordinary standard lamp socket shown as provided near its lamp attaching end with the usual external rib 11, and 12 denotes a shade which may be of any ordinary or preferred shape or configuration, may be made of any ordinary or preferred material as metahporcelain or glass and which is provided with a central opening 13 throrigh which the rib on a lamp sdcket may pass freely.
My novel shade holder comprisesa contractile collar 14, an angle ring 15 and a U-ring 16. The contractile 'collar is rovided with an internal groove 17 whic is adapted to receive the rib on a lamp socket and below the rib with a thread 18 and is divided vertically across as at 19, which permits the ring to be expanded in order to pass it over the rib of a lamp socket upon which it is self-retaining by its own resiliency. Inner or angle ring 15 comprises a horizontal flange 20 and a threaded vertical flange 21 which is adapted to engage the thread of the contractile collar and to be engagedby the thread of. the outer ring Outer or U-ring 16comprises a base 22, an outer flange 23 upon the edge of which the shade rests and a threaded inner flange 24 which is adapted to engage the thread of angle ring 15. I
The operation in use will be readily understood from the drawing. The shade is prepared for. attachment by placing outer ring 16 on the underside of the shade at the central opening, placing horizontal flange 20' of the angle ring over the shade and passing the threaded vertical flange 21 of the angle ring through the opening in the shade and turning it tightl into engagement with the threaded inner iange 24 of the U-ring. It will be noted (see Fig. 1) that in this position of the parts the portion of the shade surrounding opening 13 therein will be securely gripped and held between outer flange 23 of the U-ring and horizontal flange 20 of the angle ring. The contractile collar is slipped over the lamp attaching end of a socket, the rib on the socket engaging the groove in the collar, and then the shade is securely attached thereto by 'turning threaded vertical flange 21 of the angle ring into Y engagement with the thread of the collar.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
A shade holder comprisingaU-ring having an outer flange to support a shade and a threaded inner flange, an angle ring having a threaded flange adapted to engage the thread of the U-ring and a flange adapted to engage a shade, which is held between said flange and the outer flange of the U-ring, and a threaded contractile collar adapted to engage a lamp socket and to be engaged by the thread of the angle ring.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY HUBBELL. Witnesses A. M. Woos'rnn, -S. W. Arrrrnn'ron.
