SHADE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED HAYS, 1911.
INVENTOR 00 W NESSES: 7% fi s 4 #4,, AITORNEYS TTE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GILBERT W. GOODRIDGE, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BRYANT ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
SHADE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Application filed May 9 1911. Serial No. 625,975.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, (manner "V. Goon moon, a citizen oi. the l nited States ot" America, and residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairtield and State ot (onnecticut, have invented a certain new and useful lu'iprovelnent in Shade-Holders, ot which the following is a specititaition.
My invention relates to shade or globe holders and particularly to means for securing the holder to its support, the object of my invention being to provide asimple and etiicacious means tor locking the holder on a lamp socket or other support to which it may be desired to secure the holder.
In the accompanying illustrations. all drawn to an enlarged scale and with disproportionately thickened metal. for the purpose of more clearly showing the structure, Figure l is a vertical elevation of a shade holder secured to an electric lamp socket; Fig. .2 is a perspective ot' the locking ring; and Fig. 2-) is a perspective looking down upon the holder.
The shade or globe supporting means employed on the holder 't'orm no part of my invention and are here shown as the common set screws lt) passing through threaded perforations in the skirt ol the sl ade holder ll. Any other ldesircd shade supporting device maybe mounted on the holder.
My invention resides in the novel means provided for locking the shade holder to its support viz. in the example shown, to the electric hnnp socket 12 provided with the customary head l5, near its lamp receiving end. in the particular form illustrated, which shows only one ol the various ways in wh h my invention may he embodied, the shade holder ll is provided with an inner depending llange ll otl'set at its lower end to form a horizontal ammlar abutment ring if the internal diameter ol which is such that while the holder may be passed over the lower end of the socket. the head it) 'l'orms a stop which is engaged by the abutment ring 15. cooperating ring ltl ol' any suitable construction. which may he ad'- justed above the bead 1?). is provided with clamping screws 1? adapted to engage in bayonet slots l8 in the ring l5. .-\n annular recess ltl, formed at the upper edge ol' the flange ll, receives the outer edge ot the ring 16, so that the latter is thus supported at its inner edge by the head 13 and at its outer edge in the recess 19. This recess serves the double function of supporting the ring so that its upper face is substantially lush with the upper surface of the shade holder; while at the same time (and this is its more important function) it positions the ring 15) above the bead and prevents the expansion of the ring when the clamping screws 17 are tightened.
The method of assembling the ring 16 and holder '11 is obvious. Having adjusted the expansihle ring to above the head 13,
the shade holder is slipped over the end of the socket in such position that the heads of the screws 17 enter the enlarged ends of the bayonet slots 18. The holder is then rotated so that the screw heads enter the bayonet slots. Upon tightening the screws, the ring ltl is drawn down and the abutment tlange 13 is drawn up, so that the bead 13 is clamped between them. This clamping action serves not only to lock the holder to the head, but also to lock the ring 16 with relation to the holder body, and the device is thus very securely fastened to its support. .\ny tendency of the ring 10 to expand and thus slip over the head 13 as the screws 17 are tightened. is prevented by the fact that the ring is seated at its outer edge in the recess 12) in the body of the holder which retains the ring in its contracted position above the head 13.
Various modifications in which my invention may he embodied, will readily suggest themselves.
I claim as my invention l. A shade holder having a central depending tlange with inwardly oli'set, abutment engaging the lower side of a supporting head in adjusted position, an independent member engaging the upper side of said head in adjusted position and means for drawing said members together to lock the shade holder to said head.
L. shade holder having a central depending tlange with inwardly otl'seti'abutment engaging the lower side of a supporting head in adjusted position, an independent abutment member engaging the upper side of said head in adjusted position and screw means passing through said abutments in adjusted position for drawing Said abutments together to lock the shade holder to said head.
:5. In a shade holder, a central depending flange with inwardly ofiset abutment engaging the lower side of a supporting bead and means in connection therewith for look ing the holder to said bead.
4. shade holder having a body incinber, and shade supporting means carried thereby, a flange on said body member engaging one side of a bead in adjusted position, a clamping ring having its inner edge seated against the opposite side of said bead and its outer edge against the body of the shade holder in adjusted position, and means to draw said clamping ring and flange together to lock the shade holder on saidbead.
5. A shade holder having a body mem-v gether to lock the shade holder on said bead, said body being offset to aitord a seat for said clamping ring.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shade holder bod having an abutment flange adapted to be juxtaposed to one side of a supporting bead, of an expansible ring forming an independent eooperatii'ig abutment adapted to be juxtaposed to the opposite side oi said sup porting bead, and means for drawing said abutment members together to clamp the shade holder to said bead said ring being peripherally seated against the shade holder body in adjusted position to prevent the expansion of said ring during clamping.
In testimony whereof 1 have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
