To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, I/VALTER H. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheshire, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shade-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, iii- Figure l a view in front elevation of my improved shade-holder, showing it as ap plied to a lamp-socket. Fig. 2 a detached view in side elevation of the socket. Fig. 3 a detached view in side elevation of the clamping-ring. Fig. 4 a detached plan view of the shade-holder proper. My invention relates to an improvement in shade-holders for incandescent lamps, the object being to provide at a low cost for manufacture, a simple, convenient and effective shade-holder for the purpose described.

With these ends in view my invention consists in a shade-holder having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I construct the shade-holder with an upwardly extending socket-receiving collar consisting of three corresponding segmental collar-sections 2 respectively formed upon the inner edges of yoke-like horizontal arms 3 terminating at their outer ends in a depending flange or skirt 4: into which the upper edge of the shade is inserted for retention in place by screws 5 mounted in perforated lugs 6 depending from its lower. edge in the usual manner. The said arms 3, and hence the collar-sections 2, are separated from each other by vertical slots 7 leading at their outer ends into relatively large horizontal clearance slots 8 located in the horizontal plane and giving flexibility to the arms 3. The said collar-sections 2 are formed with an outwardly projecting knurl 9 for the reception of a circumferential head 10 at the lower end of the lamp-socket 11. p The said bead 10 of the socket 11 is crowded downward into the knurled portions 9 of the collar-sections 2 which are by it sprung outward until it enters them after which they spring back and over it and clasp it as shown in Fig. 5. The bead 10 is then firmly locked in place by the sleeving of a clamping-ring over the upper ends of the collar-sections 2 as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 5, it being then retained in place by the flaring upper edges of the collar-sections. The said clamping ring is made in one piece and comprises an inwardly extending circumferential bead 12, a retaining-edge or flange 14 extending upward and inward from the upper edge of the said head for co-acting with the upper ends of the collar sections, and with a downwardly and outwardly extending operating flange 15 by means of which the ring is engaged by the fingers, or an implement such as a knife or screw-driver, for lifting it or prying it over the upper ends of the yielding collar-section 2 so as to permit the bead 10 to be drawn out of the knurl 9 of the collar-sections.

I am aware that it is not broadly new to apply a knurled clamping-ring to yielding fingers forming a part of a shade-receiving ring and adapted to receive between them a bead formed at the lower end of a lampsocket. I do not therefore claim such a con struction broadly, but only my particular construction.

I claim In a shade-holder for incandescent lamps, the combination with a shade-receiving ring provided with a socket-receiving collar divided by vertical slots into yielding collarsections collectively having an outwardly projecting knurl for receiving a bead upon the lower end of a lamp socket; of a clamping-ring adapted to be sprung over the upper ends of the said collar-sections, and having an inwardly projecting bead, an upwardly extending and inwardly turned retaining-flange located above the same, and an outwardly turned lifting-off flange extending below the same.
