Patented May 12, 191.4.
i Application led December 31, 1912. Serial No. 739,580. l
Be it known that l", Grnoaoe C. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at and whose post-otiice address is 333 Fourth avel nue, ot' the city of New York, in the county I 0f New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
The object of my invention is to provide an improvement in lamps, having special reierence to electric portable, table lamps.
I provide an improved bracket which peru mits of the shifting of the illuminatingI por-- tion', including the light proper and the shade, laterally relatively to the base: This I accomplish by a swivel connection between the stationary support and the rotary part or bracket7 thereby permitting adjustment without bending the electric Wires, which latter action tends to break them and cause short circuits and lire.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l shows in side elevation a lamp embodying my improvements, Fig. 2 is a section of the swivel coiinectidn and Figs. 3 and Il show the parts thcreo'il separated.
The lamp l is of the portable electric kind Such as is ordinarily used on library tables. desks;A etc. In the use of these lamps it is To all iii/ioni, it may concern. I 'i at a certain point on a table away from the user toprovide space for books and papers and at the saine time have the light relatively, near the user. I haveaccordingly shown the portable lamp mounted upon a suitable base l which is weighted at its rim. The stem 3 is provided at its top with a rightfangular portion 4 which may b e cast integral with therstein or otherwise secured thereto in any manner which holds it rigid in the position shown. At its extremity the angular arm l is shown bent upward. The curved bracket 5 supports the cluster .of lights (S and the lamp shade 7 and is swiveled upon the extremity of the arm 4, as at S. This swivel connection preferably comprises a two part coupling, one oit' which 'parts has `said ariii adapted to support the lights and a central post 9 provided with a recess 10 to which one of the electric conductors 12 is connected. Surrounding this `post I have shown a metallic sleeve .13 in electrical con- 5i iiection with conductor la. The part 8 of the coupling is adapted to be connected to the part 8" by having its post enter a recess 15 ot' the latter, the recess having a pin `16 to enter tlio recess l() and a conductor 17 con- 64 lhis recess is lined with made for turning the parts S 8* relatively 6 without disturbing the circuit through the coupling or twisting the wires.
lirom the foregoing description it will be seen that without'disturbing the position of the base and,\ in fact, while even placing it farther away from the usci', the bracket 5 may be swung upon the arm et into the dotted line position or any intermediate position, the weight in theA base 2 preventing the lamp from over-turiiii'ig' while bringing the lights directly over the head of the user or at any desired point. l
l claim as my invention 1. In an electric portable lamp having n base and a stem and a light cluster normally in substantially the vertical plane of the stein, a bracket supporting said light cluster, and a swivel support for said bracket at one side of the vertical plane of said stem, Whereby said bracket inaybe shifted laterally out ot alinemciit with said stein.
2. In au electric portable lamp, the comhinatioii with the )ase and stem andthe right angular arin at the top of said stein, of a bracket supported lon said arm and con stituting; the support for the lights and foi the lamp shade, and a swivel connection between said arm and said bracket comprising two parts, one of which is formed with a post and tbc other with a recess to receive said post. l
[n a portable lamp the combination with the base and vertical stem, an arm rigidly secured to said stein, and a bracket on the lamp shade, oit a' swivel connection between said bracket and said arm, compris ing; two parte one having a post and the othe a recess; to receive said post, a metallic sleeve 'on S21-id post and :l ,metallic lining in recess, one oead and the other a Socke?J to receive said pm, @n electric conductors connected to said metallic coverings all Said pin and. socket.
parts having a, R111,
n testimony whereof, have glied this Speclicntlon 1n the presence of two suoscrlbM mg Witnesses.
