Description

' P. LEWIS. INGANDESGENT LAMP FIXTURE.
(No Mpd-el.)
Patented Dec. 2, 1890.
. I p/ f/ W m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK LEYVIS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN C. ENGLISH, OF SAME PLACE.
lNCANDESCENT-LAMP FIXTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,877, dated December 2, 1890.
Application filed August 9, 1890. Serial No. 361,594. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK LEWIS, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new I mprovement in Incandescent Electric Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and theletters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a view in side elevation of an incandescent electric lamp provided with my improvement; Fig. 2-, a detached plan view of thelamp removed from the shade andshade holder.
My invention relates to an improvement in incandescent electric lamps, the object being to provide simple and convenient means for turning the current on and off a lamp pro vided with the usual flat keyor thumb-piece, and primarily designed to be operated by hand, but hung or place so as to be not readily accessible for such operation.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a two-armed operating-lever having its central portion or body adapted to fit over or embrace an ordinary flat key or thumbpiece.
As herein shown, my improved device consists of a body portion A open at one side and having an elongated opening conforming to the transverse section of the key or thumbpiece B, over which the said body portion is slipped, being secured in place, as herein shown, by means of a set-screw C, which will preferably be employed, although I might make the operating-lever of spring metal and secure it in place by its elasticity. Two arms D and D, projecting from opposite corners and ends of the said body portion and preferably formed integral therewith, extend outward and inward at an angle to each other, and are provided at their outer ends with eyes E for the attachment of long chains F, which extend down into convenient reach. These chains are provided at their lower ends with rings G, and may, if desired, be replaced by lightcords. It will be apparent that by oper' ating one chain or the other the key or thumb-piece may be given a quarter-turn and the current turned onto or 01f the lamp.
It will be understood that my improvement is applicable to any incandescent electric lamp having a fiat key or thumb-piece, which requires no modification or change for the application of myimprovement to it. The body portion of the device may, however, be formed in different ways, and the arms may be bent and inclined with respect to each other as is found most convenient in use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with an incandescentelectric lamp having a flat key or thum b-piece for turning the current OE and on, of a twoarmed operatingdever having a central body portion provided with an opening adapting it to be slipped over and secured to the thumbpiece or key, and operating chains or cords attached to the outer ends of the arms of the lever and hanging down within easy reach for turning on and off the current, substantially as described.
