Description

F. w. PENNOCK. LAMP GUARD AND SHADE. APPLICATION f lLED JAN. 26. 1911:
Patented Oct. 30
R O T N E v m 'EM/Pnno WITNESSES ATTORNEY FREDERICK w. PENECCK, 'OFzQUEIBEC, QUEBEC, CANADA.
. lilAM P GUARDA1611) SHADE;
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be i "known that I, FREDERICK WV; PEN- NOCK, a subject of the King 'of Great Britain, residing at Quebec, in the Province of Quebec and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lamp Guards and Shades, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates. to combined lamp guards and shades and particularly to that type of the same which is capable of being looked upon the socket of an electric bulb.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a combined lamp guard and shade,
which may be locked to an incandescent bulb for the purpose of preventing breakage of the same, and to prevent the removal of the bulb, guard and shade by unauthorized persons.
' A-further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this class which is capable of being readily secured to the lamp socket and will act as a protector, for the lamp and a shade for the eye. 7
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this class which is neat and attractive in. appearance, of
simple construction and one that may be manufactured and sold at a nominal cost. 1
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of a lamp guard preferably formed of wire and provided with a split collar by means of which it is locked to the lamp socket of an incandescent bulb.
and the sectional pivoted shade secured to the split sections of the said collar.
In the drawings; Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention illustrated in its open position and about to be applied to an electric light bulb, the lamp guard being shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the invention v in its closed positionremoved .from the lamp socket; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed vertical sectional view of the combined guard and shade applied to the lamp socket, the said socket being shown in elevation.
In factories or other places employing large numbers of men and where artificial light is required it has been found that great loss has been suffered by the breakage and removal of incandescent lamps. It is necessary for the comfort of the employees to provide these lamps with shades and as the lamp socket will not permit of the use of SpeciiicationofLettrs Patent. i Patntd ocflso, 1917, Applica'tion'filed January 26, 1917; seri rnoz'ma'rsa a shade and a lamp guard upon the smne socket, the guard is omitted,resulting ina of the lamp bulbs. In order to prevent the breakage and'removal of these bulbs and at ythe same time protectfthe eyes of the worker I there, has been devised the following described combined lamp guard and shade which is capable of being securely locked large percentageofbreakage and removal 7 o The upper or opposite ends of these secf v tions are secured to a split collar 14, by
having the said ends passed through apertures and bent over as shown. The collar 14 is composed of the sections 15 and 16, and are rovided with laterally extending flanges 1? and 18 for the purpose of providing means for locking the collar together. This lock is designated at 19 and made of any preferred construction, the one shown Y being provided with a projection 20 which passes through apertures in the flange 17 for the purpose of receiving a suitable key by means of which the, sections of the collar are locked together. Each of the sections 15 and 16 are formed with flanges 21, which i when the sections are secured together form an annular flange provided with a depending flange 22, which provides means for se curing the cage'of the. lamp guard to the collar as before described.
Secured to the collar 14 is a lamp guard 23, the said guard being composed of sections 24 and 25 which are pivoted together as shown at 16. The upper ends ofthe sections 24 and 25 are provided with inturned flanges 28 which when together form an annular inturned flange which is adapted to overlie the annular flange 21 of the collar and be secured thereto by means of rivets or any other suitable fastening means. As will be seen from Fig. 1 of the drawings the sections 15 and 16 of the collar are secured to the sections 24 and 25 respectively of the lamp guard and as the said guard and collar are pivoted both at their lower ends provide a combined pivoted lamp guard and shade which is capable of beingconveniently and quickly secured and locked in position upon the socket of an incandescent lamp.
Having described the invention, What is claimed is;
1. A combined lamp guard and vshade comprising a guard provided With a split collar, a sectional shade secured to said tions'of said collar together.
2. A combination lamp guard and shade comprising a guard provided with a split collar, a sectional shade secured to said collar, said sections being hinged together and means for locking said collar upon a lamp socket. 1 I
3. A combined lamp guard and shade comprising a guard provided with a split collar, an'annular ofiset' portion formed on said collar, a shade divided into sections and pivoted together at one end, an inwardly turned flange formed at the opposite end of said shade, said flange being secured to the collar and means for locking the split porannular offset of the collar and means for locking the said collar upon a lamp socket.
t. The combination with a lamp guard formed With a split collar and a locking means, of a shade made in sections pivoted together at one end and an inturned flange formed at the opposite end of said shade and secured to said collar. 7
