G. H. DEAN.
LAMP COVERING.
Patented Jan. 15, 1889.
INVENTOR:
BY J/(wnm/ ATTORNEYS.
WITNESSES A). is. W
ATENT GEORGE I-l. DEAN, OF ST. LOUIS, MlSSOURI.
LAM P-COVERING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,146, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed January 10, 1888. Serial No. 260,325. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HAMILTON DEAN, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Lamp- Covering, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of alamp to which my improved covering has been applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the covering, showing it in an open position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple covering for inelosing the glass globes of incandescent lamps while the lamps are out of use, thereby preventing the accumulation of dust and dirt upon their outersurfaces.
My invention consists in a case formed of two similar hollow halves, which together have approximately the form of the exterior of the globe of the lamp, and which are capable of entirely inclosing the globe, the said concave parts being hinged together, so that they may be readily opened or closed to permit of applying them to or removing them from the lamp-globe.
To the lamp A, which is provided with a glass globe of the ordinary pear form, are litted the two halves a of the casing B, the said casing conforming to the general form of the exterior of the lamp-globe and being capable of entirely inclosing the lamp-globe, so as to prevent the access to the globe of dust, moisture, or anything capable of interfering with the transparency of the glass. The halves a a are preferably connected together by a hinge, I), attached to their lower larger ends, and a spring, 0, connected with the hinge, extends outwardly in opposite directions and tends to close the halves a together and to hold them in a closed position. The spring is looped between its ends to receive the hingepintle, and its ends are soldered to the coversections.
My improved casing]; maybe made of any suit-able material, such as metal or paper.
The covering is designed especially for covering lamps which are in position for use, but tmnporarily unused.
.llavingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a lamp-covering, the combination, with the concave halves forming a closed cover, of the hinge connecting the lower ends of the halves and the spring bearing on the halves at their hinged ends and holding them normally closed, substantially as set forth.
GEORGE H. DEAN.
