JOHN AITKEN SHAW, 0F MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TK)y SAFETY CAR HEATING & LIGHTING COMPANY, A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY.
BEltTH-LAMP.
Application led December 2, 1909.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN AITKEN SHAW, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Berth-Lamps; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates particularly to electric lamps for use in the illumination of the berths of cars and steamships; and it has for its object to provide a lamp for this purpose capable of being applied to a berth without unduly protruding into the berth space, and without the necessity of any additional wall space to accommodate it.
The invention may be said to consist of the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
For full comprehension, however of my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and whereinh Figure l is a front elevation of my improved lamp; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on line A-A, Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a part front elevation and part section of the carrying member; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on line B-B, Fi g. 1.
rIhe carrying member of my lamp consists or" a box having a circular lower end having an opening adapted to accommodate the bulb 2 of the lamp, and a horizontally disposed oblong upper end c, capable of containing a switch 3, and connected to the circular lower end by a diminished waist portion d accommodating the socket i of the lamp. W'ithin the circular portion b is mounted a reflector' c consisting of a polished hemispherical member having a flange f by which it is connected to the rim of the box, the upper end of said reflector having the male member g of the lamp fitting snugly against it.
r is a hinge-plate having a screw threaded boss s and side bosses t and u, the screws o connecting said hinge-plate to the box. A cover or face-plate is hinged to this box and consists of an opaque semi-cylindrical portion 7c with an annular depending extension m serving as a frame for holding a hemi- Specication of Letters Patent.

spherical translucent glass n, by retaining clips 0. closed by a spring latch 29 and it is clamped in place by a screw Q. It need not ordinarily be opened however except when a light bulb is to be changed or renewed as the light diffused through the glass n is usually the direct rays from the lamp can be availed of by setting the cover out to the position shown in dotted lines, in which position the interior of the glass n will act as a refiector. The cover is held in different angular position by the stiffness of the hinge or other suitable means.
rlhe switch 3 may be of any preferred construction and the same can be said of the lamp and its socket.
What I claim is as follows l. The combination with a carryingmember having means for supporting a lamp; a lamp suspended within said member; a reflector within said member coperating with said lamp; a face-plate, a hinged portion connecting the face-plate to said member above said lamp; a transparent globe carried by said face-plate and surrounding a portion of said lamp; and means for rigidly holding said hinged portion in a given relation to said face-plate.
2. The combination with a wall provided with a recess therein; of means for carr ing an electric lamp, comprising a box-portion extending into said recess; a socket extending into said box-portion; a face-plate partially covering said box-portion and hinged thereto; and a transparent member carried by the said face-plate and closing the remaining portion of said box-member.
3. The combination with a wall provided with a recess therein; of means for carrying an electric lamp, comprising a box-portion extending into said recess; a socket extending into said box-portion; a face-plate partially covering said box-portion and secured to the latter; a transparent member carried by the said face-plate and closing the remaining portion of said box-portion; and a switch, for controlling the operation of said lamp, mounted on the lamp carrying means.
4:. The combination with a carryingmember having a circular end-portion and a transverse oblong end-portion united bv a. portion of reduced width; of an electric held in place This cover is held lamp and socket contained Within the circular end-portion and narrow portion of said member; an electric switch located within the transverse oblong portion of said member; a hemispherical reiiector Within the circular portion of said member; a hinged cover having a hemispherical translucent glass set therein; and a spring-catch for holding the cover closed upon said member.
5. The combination with a carryingmember; of a hinge-plate provided with bosses tting into the said member; screws passed through the bosses and screwed into the body of said member; said hinge-plate having a central, hollow boss adapted to have a lamp-socket attached thereon; a cover for said member; and means hinging the cover to the said member.
6. An electric fixture comprehending a box-portion; a face-plate carried by the latter; means for supporting an electric lamp extending into said box-portion; a reflector Within said box-portion; the face-plate comprising an opaque portion adapted to obscure a part of said box-portion, and a transparent member carried by said opaque portion adapted to emit rays from said boxportion.
7. An electric fixture comprehending a face-plate; a box-portion carried upon one side thereof; means for supporting an electric lamp extending into said box-portion; an electric lamp; a reflector Within said boxportion; an opaque member carried by the face-plate and covering a part of said boxportion; and a transparent member carried by said face-plate and covering the remainder of said box-portion and transmitting rays of said lamp therethrough.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this speciication, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN AITKEN SHAW.
