Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK Vann- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vermilion, county f Erie, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improvement in Lighting-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present invention relates to a lighting fixture, and partici'llarly to a combined electric socket or lamp receptacle, cover and shade holder. lit is desired to provide such a combination which will be simple in 0011- struction and easy to attach.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The annexed drawing and thefollowing description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such dis closed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing :Figure 1 is a central section showing the shade holder, the lamp receptacle or electric light socket and the cover for the same; Fig. 2 shows perspective views of certain individual elements of the complete structure; and Fig. 3 is a section through two sizes of shade holders, showing how they may be adapted to a single size of lamp receptacle.
In Fig. 1, I show a conduit 1 which will contain insulated electrical wires 2 adapted to be connected with a lamp receptacle 3 of the usual construction, which is interiorly threaded for the purpose of engaging an electric light bulb l and is exteriorly threaded to provide a means of engagement with one of the members comprising the present invention. Such a member may be an annulus 5 interiorly threaded and having an outwardly extending flange 6. It will be understood that any other type of engaging means may be used between the annulus and the lamp receptacle, and also that, while my invention is particularly adapted to electrical fixtures, yet it may be readily modified for use with other illuminating means.
A shade holder 7 is provided, preferably circular, and adapted to receive small screws 8 and which will engage the inturned neck of the shade 9. This holder 7 will have an inwardly extending flange 10 adapted to rest upon and register with the flange 6 of the annulus.
Any suitable type of cover 11 may be provided for the lamp receptacle, such as the bell-shaped member shown in Fig. 1. and will be adapted to engage the lower end of the conduit 1, and having an exteriorly eX- tending flange 12 adapted to rest upon and register with the flange 10 of the shade holder. The exact construction of the cover will depend upon the connections and use of the electric lamp, and it will be readily seen that in some circumstances it will be desirable to provide a heavier and larger cover of the type which is fastened directly to the ceiling or wall of the building, in which event the shade holder would preferably be connected to the cover with the flange of the former below that of the latter.
When the flanges 6, 10 and 12 of the annulus, shade holder, and cover, respectively are in register, as shown in Fig. 1, small holes or apertures 13 will be bored in these flanges registering with each other, and in these apertures there will be inserted small screws or retaining pins 1 1. This provides a very compact and close construction, and yet one which may be readily taken apart, if fo 1 any reason one of the members is re quired to be removed for the purpose of re pair.
From Fig. 3 it will be seen that various sizes of shade holders may be used with a given size of annulus and cover, since it is only necessary that the apertures 13 be so placed in the flange that they will register with the similar apertures in the annulus and cover, and that the central aperture or opening in the top of the shade holder be sufliciently large to extend over the body portion of the annulus. Thus any desired size of electric bulb may be used with my invention, the only change necessary being that the shade holder be suitably enlarged and the inwardly extending flange of the same be extended sufliciently to register with the flanges on the annulus and cover.
The advantages of the present construction are the simplicity, ease of assembly and adaptability of the annulus and cover to various sizes of shade holders. Furthermore, the device when assembled is neat in appearance and the various parts are securely fastened together.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by the following claim or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention In a device of the character described, the combination With an exterior-1y threaded lamp receptacle; of an interiorly threaded annulus adapted to detachably engage said receptacle, said annulus having laterally eX- tending flanges thereon, a shade holder having an aperture therein and an inwardly extending lateral flange surrounding such aperture and adapted to rest upon and register with the flange on said annulus, a cover for said receptacle having an outwardly ex tending lateral flange adapted to rest upon and register with such flange on said shadeholder, such flange on said cover thereby retaining said shade-holder on said annulus, such three flanges being provided With registering apertures, and screws adapted to detachably engage the same, thereby securely clamping said annulus, said cover and said shade-holder together.
