Description

M. P: STEVENS. UGHTING FIXTURE.
APPLICATION FILED APR-22. $915.
Patenwfi Dec. 19,1916.
UNITED STATES I ATENT OFFICE.
MERTON P. STEVENS, OF EAST ORANGE SCI-IROEDER AND CHARLES A. SCHROEDER NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO EDWARD DOING BUSINESS UNDER THE NAME AND STYLE OF THE EDWARD SCHROEDER LAMP WORKS, 0F JERSEY CITY, NEW
JERSEY.
LIGHTING-FIXTURE.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MERTON P. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lighting- Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This inyention relates to lighting fixtures and its novelty consists in the construction and adaptation of the parts, as will be here-v inafter more specifically pointed out.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved lighting fixture in which a socket or other receptacle for a source of illumination is carried by a rigid support which is secured to a wall or ceiling, and an ornamental canopy is placed around the support to conceal the details of its construction and relieve its somewhat necessarily stifi" appearance, and is adjustablycarried from the support in such a manner that it may readily be brought into proper relation with the Wall or ceiling and at the same time removed therefrom readily to afford access to the support and its connections without disturbing them.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for holding a shade. bowl or reflector in proper relation to the source of illumination and the canopy, so as to provide a pleasing, simple fixture in which the parts are accessible and which is ornamental and harmonious in appearance.
In the drawings, there is represented a vertical central section of a preferred form of lighting fixture, embodying my invention, the parts back of the section'plane being shown in elevation.
In the drawings, 10,1'epresents a wall or ceiling, through which there is adapted to protrude a support indicated at 11 and which terminates in a hickey 12 having an externally threaded end 13 through Which electrical conductors (not shown) are passed. A socket or receptacle for the source of illumination is indicated at 14 and it is secured directly to the nipple 13 or by means of a flanged hub 15 threaded on to-the nipple 13 and secured to the socket by screws 16. Surrounding the support and socket is a canopy indicated at 20 which constitutes an ornamental housing or inclosure for the Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Bea 19, 1916. Application filed April 22, 1915. Serial No. 23,032.
other parts and is adapted to contact with I the wall or ceiling 10.
Carried from the support 11 through the hub 15 is a shell 21 which is preferably threaded. A canopy holder 22' comprising a shell having an upper threaded portion 23 adapted to engage the threads on the upper part of the shell :21, and a terminal annular flange indicated at Ql upon which the lower edge of the canopy 20 rests, is adapted adustabiy to support the canopy and hold it against the wall or ceiling;
Secured to the shell 21 is a shade holder 25 comprising a shell having an upper threaded portion 26 adapted to engage the threads of the lower part of the shell 21 and a lower flanged portion 28 to which a shade indicated at 30 'may be secured in any usual manner as by set screws 27. It should be noted that the adjustment of the shade holder 25 on the shell 21 and the adjustment of the canopy holder 22 thereon are quite independent of each other and that either may be moved along a theoretical longitudinal axis of the entire device without disturbing the position or relation of the other to the support and socket. It will be understood of course that the shade 30 may be replaced by a bowl or reflector or similar lightmodifying clement without departing from the principle of the invention.
I claim:
1. A lighting fixture comprising a support adapted to carry a-'socket, or v other source of illumination, said support including a hub having a flanged portion, a threaded shell carried by said flanged portion, a
canopy, a canopy holder adjustably engag- 3. A lighting fixture comprising a sup port adapted to carry a socket or other source of illumination, a threaded shell 09'1" dependent shade hold'er adjustably engaging another part of the shell. i
a eanopy. a canopy earried hy the socket. a canopy. a eanony holder threaded at one end thereof, said threaded portion engageahle with the 1'5 threads on one end of the shell. the other end of said shell being enlarged and spared from the shell and a threaded shade h lder arranged between the eanop) holder and the shell and :Hljlltititlll) engaging: the other end 20 of the shell.
in testimony whereof I allix my signature.
