Description

H. A. FRAMBURG LAMP SOCKET INCLOSURE Filedlpril 30 1921 v Inventor: Henry flfiumbur J5. 7 M.
Patented Aug. 4-, 192.5.
HENRY A. FRAIJIBIJ'BG,
OE BER'WYN, ILLINOIS.
LAMP-SOCKET rnoilosunu.
Application filed April 30, 1921. Serial No. 465,771.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRYA. 'FBAMBURG, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Berwyn, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Lamp-Socket Incl-osures, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to lighting fixtures and has for its object to provide an improved ornamental inclosure for an electric lamp socket. If desired the said improved inclosure may be constructed for use either as a shade holder or as a candle cup. To
this end the invention contemplates a flanged cup for surrounding the lamp socket with the cup flange equipped with fastening devices which are adjustable for exterior engagement with the neck of a lamp shade or for interior engagement with the flange of an ornamental cover plate.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a sectional view illustrating a preferred form of the improved inclosure when used as a candle cup, the associated lamp socket and lamp and a detail of the lamp bracket being shown in elevation;
Fig. 2 is similar to Fig. 1, but shows the device in use as a shade holder, and
Fig. 3 is a plan sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
/Vhile the ornamental design of the improved inclosure forms no part of the present invention, the particular form selected for illustration comprises a generally cylindrical sheet metal cup 10 having a rounded bottom 11 and an enlarged rim or flange 12.
Whenso constructed, the bottom 11 of the cup may be apertured to receive the end of a lamp bracket, as 13, and the cup is held in place about the lamp socket, as 14, by being clamped between the base nipple 15 of the -lamp socket and a shoulder 16 of the bracket 13.
In carrying out the invention the rim 12 of the cup 10 is equipped with fastening de vices which may be used for securing a cover plate 17 upon the open end of the cup and when so used these fastening devices are concealed by the cover plate. As shown, the cover plate 17 is formed with a flange 18 larger than the rim 12 of the cup and thumb screws 19 are mounted in the rim of the cup for frictional engagement with the flange 18 of the cover plate upon the inside of the same. Since the thumb screws 19 are inaccessible for adjustment when the cover plate 17 is in place upon the end of the cup, the flange 18 of the cover plate is preferably formed with oppositely inclined beveled surfaces 20 and 21 providing an intermediate annular shoulder 22, and the elastic yielding of the cover plate 17 and its flange 18 are relied upon to permit of the said annular shoulder being pressed over the end of the thumb screws 19 in applying and removing the cover plate.
Obviously suitable adjustment of the thumb screws 19 is necessary in advance of applying the cover 17 to the open end of the cup 10. For this purpose the heads 23 of the thumb screws are most conveniently located upon the inside of the cup, the said thumb screws being directed outwardly through the rim 12. The smaller ends of the thumb screws are therebypositioned for frictional engagement with the flange 18 of the cover plate.
It is also apparent that if the rim 12 of the cup 10 is suitably proportioned to receive the neck, as 24:, of a shade 25 when the cover plate 17 is not in use, the same thumb screws 19 may be employed for holding the shade in the usual manner by merely reversing the thumb screws in the rim 12 of the cup, as in Fig. 2. The invention accordingly provides a candle cup having a removable cover plate which is securely held against accidental displacement, while the same candle cup may be used as a shade holder, if desired, without the provision of additional parts.
I claim as my invention: a
1. In a lighting fixture, in combination, a
lamp socket cup, a removable flanged cover fitting over the rim of the cup, and a plurality of thumb screws radially mounted in the rim of the cup and acting outwardly upon the inside of the flange of the cover.
2. In a lighting fixture, in combination, a lamp socket cup, a removable flanged elas tic cover fitting over the rim of the cup, the flange of the cover being formed upon the inside of the same with an intermediate annular shoulder and with outwardly inclined annular surfaces at opposite sides of the said shoulder, and a plurality of thumb screws radially mounted in the rim of the cover and acting outwardly upon the inside of the flange of the cover, the said annular shoulder upon the inside of the cover flange being movable over the thumb screws by the elastic yielding of the cover to allow cam engagement of the thumb screws with one of the said inclined annular surfaces.
3. In a lighting fixture, in combination a lampsocket cup having a flange at its rim adapted to receive the neck of a lamp shade a removable flanged cover adapted to fit over the cup flange, and an adjustable fastening device projecting radially through the cup flange for outward engagement with the inside of the cover flange, the said ad just-able fastening device being adapted to be used for retaining a lamp shade in the said flange of the cup.
4. In a lighting fixture, in combination, a cup, holding means including a thumb screw projecting outwardly from the rim of said cup, a cover, and a resilient flange on said cover adapted to spring over said thumb 20 HENRY A. FRAMBURG.
