a. L. LAMB. LAMP CLUSTER, APPLICATKON FILED APR-161ml].-

INVEINTDRM UNITED sTATEs PATENT o Ic GEORGE L. LAMB, or 'NAIPANEE', INDIANA, Assrewon TO LAMB BROTHERS & GREENE,
- or NAPPANEE, INDIAN A CORPORATION or INDIANA. A
LAMP-CLUSTER.
Specification oi. Letters latcnt. Patented Feb. 26,1918.
Application filed April 16, 1917. Serial No. 162,503.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, GEORGE L. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nappanee, in the county of Elkhart and Suite of Indiana, have invented a. certain new and useful Lamp-Cluster; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of referencemarked thereon, Whichform a part of this specification.
This invention relates to electric lightingfixtures, and more particularly to cl us-' ters for portable lamps, domes, inverted lights, etc., and has for its object the provision of an adjustable lamp socket-for such clusters whereby the several lamps of a cluster, any numberof which may be em ployed, can be easily and quickly adjusted to' suit the shape, size or style of the dome broken away, and Fig. isa separated peror shade employed.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp cluster .of the-suspended type embodying my invention,'with the associated shadein. section. Fig. 2 is'a similar ,view of a portable lamp embodying the invention, with. parts spectivc view of the cluster parts.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body member of a cluster with two lamp sockets 2, 2 attached thereto, said body membet in- Fig. 1 being carried by a suspending chain 3, and in Fig. 2 being mounted on a standard 4, which may either be portable or stationary as desired. 1
The body member 1 is provided with a plurality of openings 5, the number of which corresponds to the number of lamps desired intheicluster, and provided, in the present instance, at oppositesides of each opening are a pair of cars 6, which preferably project outward and are providedwith.
alined perforations for receiving 'a short shaft 7. Each lamp socket 2 is provided at its inner end with an outwardly projecting nipple 8, which is screwed into or otherwise suitably secured to. the socket end long1tud1- nally thereof and has its outer end portion adapted to fit into an opening 5 in the cluster body or between the ears 6 thereof. The portion -o.f the nipple which projects between the ears 6 is preferably square'd'or flattened at its opposite sides and of suit- -able width to fit snugly between said ears and is perforated to receive the shaft 7. If the shaft 7 comprises a bolt or screw, as shown, the ears may be drawn toward each other to frictionally grip the nipple by a tightening of the shaft screw or-bolt. It is evident that the frictional gripping of the nipple by the bearing ears will yieldingly retain the nipple and socket in any position of adjustment relative to the cluster-body.
The electric wires 9 for each lamp socket extend into the Same through the nipple .'8 from the interior of the cluster body where they connect to the common supply wires 10 in any well known manner. I
It is evident that the several lamps of a cluster can be easily and quickly adjusted to suit the sliape, -size or style of the shadeor dome employed, and that the lamps remain in any position to which adjusted-1 I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, ar-
rangement or form of the parts, as itis capable of numerous modifications without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a lamp cluster, supporting means, a
hollow body member carried thereby and having a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings, each having opposed ears integral with its side walls, and a plurality 9f lampf sockets each having a' nipple proecting from its inner end and pivotally mounted in one of said openings betweenthe ears thereof fol-swinging adjustment; relative to said member.
2. In a lamp cluster, a supporting means, an enlarged hollow member carried by said i means and having provisipn for supporting a shade, said member having a' plurality ofv circumferentially spaced openings in midially spaced relation to the axis of said supporting means and the opposed side walls of each opening having integral ears projecting 5 therefrom substantially in parallel relation, a plurality of lamp sockets each having its inner end provided with a nipple for fitting between the ears of a set, and means for piv- 'otally mounting a, nipple between the ears of each set with the ears frictionally engag- 1 ing the nipple sides to yicldingly retain the socket in adjusted relation to said member. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
