ELECTRIC-LIGHT FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1921.
Application filed March 27, 1920. Serial No. 369,387.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT O.'ToMLrN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric-Light Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to elecfor its object the provision of a fixture which is arranged to support both light-diffusing bowl and reflector from an electric lamp socket.
It is also an object to provide a fixture of this character which shall be ornamental in use and comparatively simple in construction.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and relative position of the parts and members hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing in which like reference characters indicate like corresponding parts: a
Figure 1 is an elevation of an electriclight fixture embodying my invention. Fig. 2, illustrates an elevation of my improved reflector and globe holder, and Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 3, showing the tightening screw for the expansible socket collar.
Referring to the illustrations, and particularly to Fig. 1, 10 indicates an electric lamp which is carried in the socket 11. The reflector 12 and the translucent glass diffusing bowl or globe 13 are both supported by or carried in the holder generally designated 1 by the numeral 14.
The holder 14, is releasably supported on the lamp socket 11 and embodies an annular reflector support 15, which is formed of an inverted L cross section with the lateral flange 15 reinforcing the top thereof and having a plurality of integral radial extensions 15 which have riveted connection with and support the expansible split socket collar 16.
The split collar 16 is adapted for releasable attachment to the electric socket 11 and for this purpose is split and formed with the laterally disposed substantially parallel ends 16 which extend through the slot 17 of the supporting lug 17. The lug 17 is here preferably shown as integral with the flange 15. It is obvious that by simple operation of the screw 18 the spring collar will be tightened or released so that the entire reflector and bowl holder 14 can be readily attached to the socket.
The glass reflector 12 is supported on its upper or inner edge within the annular support by screws 19.
For supporting the bowl 13, which is here preferably shown with an outwardly disposed flanged upper edge 13 I provide a plurality of equally spaced flat spring arms 20, which are attached in any suitable manner at their upper ends to the spring collar 16. The greater portion of each of these arms 20 is angularly or outwardly disposed from the upper end, and the lowerend terminates in a hook 20 which can be sprung over the flange 13 of the bowl.
With the foregoing construction, the bowlsupporting means and the reflector-supporting means are permanently and inseparably connected together-that is to say, the bowlsupporting resilient arms 20 are permanently connected to the reflector-supporting ring 14, and the latter is permanently connected to the clamping ring 16 which clamps upon the electric lamp socket. be seen that the springy arms 20 must be forced together and must pass through the opening in theshade 12 in the assembling of the structure. Again, it will be seen that the arms 20 alternate with the arms 15 upon which the reflector-supporting ring 14 is mounted on the resilient clamping ring 16 of the combined reflector and bowl-sup- )orting device.
When the screw 18 is tightened, after the device is in place, the ring 16 is thereby contracted on the socket of the lamp, thus rendering the upper ends of the resilient arms 20 rigid with the sides of the socket, thereby to provide a resilient bowl holder which also carries the reflector and which is removable downwardly from the socket, the upper end of the device being too large to pass through the central opening of said reflector, so that the lower ends of the arms 20 must pass through the reflector. The bowl 13 can be removed, the lamp 10 can be It will also unscrewed from the smket, and the entire device shown in Fig. 2 can then be removed downwardly from the socket.
I claim:
1. In an electric light, the combination of a lamp socket, a resilient clamping ring encircling said socket and removable downwardly therefrom, spring arms permanently united with said ring, a reflector having a central openingwhich is larger than said ring, said arms extending downward through said opening and being movable toward each other to permit downward removal of said reflector while said ring remains in place on the socket, a bowl detachably engaging the lower ends of said arms to spread them apart, so that the bowl is removably supported, and means for contracting the ring solidly upon said lamp socket to render the upper ends of said resilient arms rigid with the sides of the socket, to form a spring bowl holder, and for expanding the ring to disconnect said arms from the sides of the socket.
2. A structure as specified in claim 1, in combination with means mounted on said ring to rigidly and detachabl support said reflector, so that both the reflector and the bowl are hung on the sides of the socket, said means and ring being permanently united, and said means comprising a ring which is larger than the opening in said reflector, so that in assembling the structure the lower ends of said arms must pass through the reflector.
3. A structure as specified in claim 1, in combination with means mounted on said ring and whereby said reflector is removably supported in position above the bowl.
4. As an article of manufacture, a ring adapted to encircle a lamp socket, means to contract the ring solidly upon the socket, spring arms permanently unite-d at their upper ends with said ring to form a resilient bowl holder, so that expansion of the ring is necessary to disconnect the spring arms from the socket, a reflector support permanently united with said ring, and means on said support to detachably engage a reflector which has an opening that is smaller than removing the re said arms must pass ring for contracting the ring solidly upon the sides of the socket, to render the upper 7 ends of the spring arms rigid with the sides of the socket, and for expanding the ring to disconnect the spring arms from the socket, and means for supporting a reflector for downward removal from said arms while said ring remains in place on said lamp socket.
6. The combination of an electric lamp socket, a reflector having a central opening for the socket, a bowl below the lamp, supporting means for detachabl en aging the rim of said reflector aroun. sai opening, so that the reflector is removable by downward disconnection from said means thereof, supporting means for detachably engaging the rim of the bowl, and fastening means whereby said reflector and the supporting means therefor are removable intact from the lower end of said lamp socket, the lower end of the supporting means for the bowl being adapted for insertion through said opening to engage or disengage the bowl, said fastening means comprising a resilient clamping ring having secured thereto said means for supporting the bowl, as Well as said means for supporting the reflector, whereby both of said means are permanently united and are removable intact with said reflector from the lower end of said socket.
7 A structure as specified in claim 6, said means for supporting the bowl comprising spring arms which can be pressed together at their lower ends to pass through said opening, and which extend downward and outward from said clamping ring.
In witness whereof, I 'have hereunto subscribed my name this 18thday of March,
HERBERT O. TOMLIN SON.
