Patented Oct. 26, 1926.
UNITED STATES WHITMAN SYIVIIVIES, OF SAN FRANCISCO,
PATENT OFFICE.
CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS DAY ELECTRIC-LIGHTING FIXTURE.
Application filed January The invention relates to electric lighting fixtures and particularly to holders for supporting a globe or bowl from the ceiling. Holders of this type are frequently made with an upper bell and a lower bell and an intermediate portion of lesser diameter than the bell. The holder is made in two pieces, the upper bell usually constituting one piece and the lower bell and the intermediate portion usually constituting the other piece. The holder is usually made of pressed or stamped sheet metal, having a smooth or regular external surface, so that while the holder possesses the necessary utility, it is frequently considered as not being sufficiently ornamental for a lighting fixture.
An object of the present invention is to provide means for attaching an ornamental device to a holder of this character, to make the fixture more ornamental.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for attaching an ornamental device to the holder, which does not in any manner increase the cost of the holder.
The invention possesses other advantage ous features, some of which with the foregoing, will be set forth at length in the following description where I shall outline in full that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. In said drawings I have shown one form of lighting fixture embodying my invention, but it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to such form, since the invention, as set forth in the claims, may be embodied in a plurality of forms.
Referring to said drawings:
Figure 1 is a half-elevation, half-verticalsection, of a lighting fixture embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a cross section taken on the line 22 Figure 1.
The fxture comprises a holder having an upper portion or hell 3, a lower portion or hell I, to which the bowl or globe 5 1s attached by the screws 6 and an intermediate portion 7 which is of lesser diameter than the bells 3 and 4. The holder is made in 31, 1925. Serial No. 6,000.
two parts, which are fitted together and secured together by screws 8. The longitudinally split, two-part holder is made of sheet metal, stamped or pressed to the desired form, and usually has a smooth outer sur face, which is free from ornamentation. In accordance with my invention, I apply an ornamental ring 9 to the holder, the ring being of lesser diameter than either of the bells 3 or l and preferably underlying the upper bell The ring 9 is preferably a one-piece continuous casting and is so constructed that it is held in place by the ends of the screws 8, which project through the two pieces of the holder at their juncture. The ring is provided with a horizontal flange 12 and the ends of the screws are disposed below the flange 12, to support the ring in position. The screws may also contact with the vertical flange 13 of the ring to securely the ring in. position against rotational movement when desired. By this arrangement I provide an ornamental holder by placing around the holder a ring of lesser diameter than the upper and lower portions of the holder and secure the ring in place by the screws which secure the two pieces of the holder together.
I claim:
1. An electric lighting fixture comprising a horizontally split two-piece holder, a ring surrounding said holder, a flange on said ring and screws extending through the two pieces of the holder to secure them together, the ends of the screws being disposed under the flange to support the ring in position.
2. An electric lighting fixture comprising a holder comprising two pieces meeting in a cylindrical joint, one of said pieces being greater in diameter than said joint, and the other of said pieces being lesser in diameter than said joint, radially disposed screws for positioning said joint, and a ring surrounding said joint and retained against said piece of greater diameter by said screws.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
WHITMAN SYMMES.
