ADOLPH c. BECKER, or OAKVIIIILE, CONNECTICUT,.-ASS-IGNQR r THE CHASE cor/n rnnrns 11m, on wA'rEn URY, CONNECTICUT, A conroan'rrom COMBINED INCANDESCENT-LAMP-SOCKET-INTERIOR COVER AND SHADE-HOL eas es,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I AnoLPH G. BECKER, a citizen of the United states, residing at Oakville, in the county of-Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Incandescent Lamp Socket Interior Covers and Shade-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute. part of this application, and represent, in.
-Figure 1, a view in side elevation of my improved combined lamp-socket-interior cover and shade-holder. v
Fig. 2, a view thereof in vertical central section, the screw-shellandsocket-base bein shown in elevation.
h3g3, a,detached view in side elevation of the retaining-sleeve.
Fig. 4, a corresponding view of the shadeholder. I
My invention relates to. an improved combined lamp-socket-interiorcover and shadeholder of the type in which the shade is suspended without the aid of screws, which are replaced by a shade-support located within the neck of the shade, the object being to secure the economy and convenience pro-.
ceeding from the use of a lamp-socket-interior as distinguished from a complete lamp-socket, in addition to the enhanced appearance of the fixture resulting from the avoidance of the use of a plu'ralitypf screws for supporting the shade.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a cover adapted to receive a lampsocket-inter'io'r'. and provided with interior retaining-means, an externally threaded retaining-sleeve adapted to fit over the screwshell of a socket-interior and provided at its upper end with a concentric, ofl setting flange adapted to be engaged with the retaining-means of the cover and to crowd the lamp-socket-interior to a bearing in the upper end of the cover, and a shade-support adapted to fit within the neck of a shade and formed with an upstanding, threaded ring adapted to be screwed over the threaded portion of the said retaining-sleeve.
My invention further consists in certain I details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
Specification of Letters Patent. I

and furnished at its upper end with a suspension-loop 4, which might be replaced by a threaded bushing, and at its lower end with a concavo-convex flangge 5 adapted to receive the lip 6 of a shade 7.
Whatever the specific design, shape, and
size of the cover 3, it will be adapted to receive a lamp-socket-interior by which I socket complete in every respect except for its sheet-metal cover generally consisting of As shown, the lamp-socket-interior consists of a base 8 of porcelain or other insulating material, a
screw-shell 9 smaller in diameter than the said base, and a tubular lining 10 of fiber or other material fitting over and inclosing the base and shell to which it is conformed. The lining 10 is supplemented by a disk 11 of similarmaterial, located within the top of the cover.
.For holding the said lamp-socket-interior within the cover, I employ a retaining-sleeve 12 adapted to fit oven the screw-shell 9, having its lower end threaded as at 13 and having its upper end formed with a threaded, concentric, oifset-ting flange 14 adapted in diameter and in the pitch of its threads to be screwed into the threads 2 of the cover 3. By offsetting the flange 14 from the sleeve 13, I form a shoulder 15 which en-' gages with the shoulder of the tubular lining 10 and crowds the upper end of the lampsocket-interior into the contracted upper end of the cover which centers and supports the said lamp-socket-interior, which is thus firmly clamped against longitudinal or rotary movement within. the cover by the cover itself and by the-shoulder 15 of the sleeve 12.
For the retention of the shade 7 in place, I employ a shade-support comprising a circular, flaring shade holding flange 16 adapted to fit within'the neck of the shade, as shown in Fig. 2, and a threaded collar 17 upstandingfrom the said flange 16 and adapted to screw over the threads '13 of the sleeve 12, whereby the shade is virtually susmean to designate an incandescent lamp- -.of the flange l4 ofthe sleeve 13 would be correspondingly modified.
I claim: I The combination with a lamp-socket-interior comprising a cylindrical base of in- .sulating material, a screw-shell attached thereto and smaller in diameter than the same, and a tubular envelop of insulating material fitting over and conforming to the saidbase and shell; of a cover having suspension-means at its closed upper end and adapted to' receive through its open lower end the said lamp-socket-interior and the neck of a lamp-shade; a retaining-sleeve, made independent of the said cover and adapted to fit over the lower portion of the said insulating envelop and offset at its upper end to form shoulder which engages with the said enveio' at a point adjacent to the lower edge of-tl ie ing the said lamp-socket-interiorv upward into the closed upper end of the said cover and holding it therein against displacement, and the upper end of the said sleeve being removably secured to the inside of the said cover; and a shade-support having an upstanding sleeve by means of which it is applied to the said'retaining-sleeve and formed upon its lower end with a flaring shadesupporting flange adapted to fit within the neck of a lamp-shade and coacting' with the 25 said base'for crowdlower end of the cover for confining the neck of the shade in place therein.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of tw'olsubscribing witnesses. t
