5 Kings, city and State of New York, have in-vv vented an Improvement in Covers for Electric-Lamp Sockets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to socket covers for Socket covers in general use are constructed to act both as a cover for the lamp socket, and as a holder for the shade or bowl, that is, the upper end of the socket projects through an opening l5lin the top of the cover, which cover rests upon the top oi the socket, while its lower l part receives the neck or flange of the bowl, being provided with set screws to clamp and support the shade.

[ In some fixtures a separate shade ring or holder is employed to which the lower part of the socket is detachably secured, usually by a thread upon the socket screwed into a threaded central opening in the ring or holder, and with such fixtures it has not been customary to make use of a socket cover.

The object of my present invention is to provide a cover for the sockets of this character, whereby the appearance of the fixture is greatly improved, and the cover can be readily attached without the necessity of making any change whatever in either the socket or shade holder.

10, indicates the socket cover which is of sheet metal pressed to shape and open at both top and bottom. The opening at the bottom is of larger diameter than the opening at the. top. The top portion is without flange or curvature; at a predetermined distance from the top it is curved outwardly, and at the extreme lower end is preferably curved downwardly at an inclination.

Where a socket is provided with a key,

this cover 10 may be provided with a vertical open ended slot 11 to fit over the shank of the key.

In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, I have separately illustrated the character of socket and shade ring or holder with which my improved cover is designed for use, and in Fig. 3 I have illustrated these parts as sembled.

12, denotes the lamp socket provided at its lower part with an exterior screw-thread l3, and at its upper part with an exterior annular band or rib 14.

I have shown the socket as provided with a key 15, but this is not always employed.

16, indicates the shade holder which has a central opening 17, screw-threaded.

18, denotes a plurality of set-screws by which a shade or bowl may be held to the ring or holder 16.

The lamp socket 12 is detachably connected with the holder 16 by screwing its lower threaded end into the threaded central opening 17 in the holder.

The cover 10 is made of a height to ex actly fit between the under surface of the band or rib 14 on the socket 12, and the top of the holder 16, at its outer edge, when the socket is screwed into the threaded opening 17 in the shade holder, and the downwardly curved lower edge of the cover conforms to the curvature at the outer extremity of the top of the shade holder, giving the fixture the outward appearance of a one piece article when in use.

In assembling the arts, the lower part of the socket 12, is passed into the top opening of the cover 10, and where the key 15 18 provided on the socket, it is passed into the slot 11, in the cover, allowing the top of the cover to contact with the under surface of the band or rib 14, on the socket; while in thi position the lower end of the socket is screwed into the threaded opening of the shade holder 16, the cover being thus securely clamped in place, entirely covering the socket below the band or rib 14, and giving a finished and ornamental appearance to the fixture.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with a lamp socket provided with an exterior annular band adjacent its upper end, and a shade-holder detachably connected to the lower end of the socket, of a socket-cover comprising a circular hollow body open at both ends, the upper half being of uniform diameter and the lower half curved outwardly, said cover being clamped between said annular band up n th sock t and the top of said shadeholder.

2. In a lighting fixture, the combination of a lamp-socket provided with an ex terior annular band adjacent its upper end, and a screw thread adjacent its lower end, a shade holder provided with a central threaded opening and set screws for clamping a shade, a socket cover comprising a circular hollow body open at both ends the upper half being of uniform diameter and the lower half curved outwardly; said cover being clamped between said annular band upon the socket and the top of said shade holder when the threaded end of said socket is screwed into the central opening in the shade-holder.
