object being to provide in one article a cover and holder for the lamp socket and also a holder for the glassware or shade.

Heretofore a socket cover finished and complete in all parts has been employed in connection with a shade holder and sometimes this shade holder has been attached to the lower portion of the socket cover and at other times the shade holder has been separate from and enveloped the polished and finished socket shell or cover.

One of the objects of my invention therefore is to completely eliminate this finished socket shell or cover and arrange and secure the socket firmly in place in the cover, thereby economizing greatly in the cost of production. Furthermore, it removes the danger of the socket shell being pulled apart from the weight of the glass in those cases where the shade holder is attached to the lower'portion of the socket shell and it also overcomes the difficulty of securely fastening the socket when a socket cover is employed separate and distinct from the shade holder.

A device constructed in accordance with 'my invention adapts itself for any size and shape of glass ware and can be used in connection withsecuring screws or it can be used in connection with the screwless fastenin devices which form the subject matter 0 Patent ,#1,037 ,101 issued to me Angust27, 1912. It will of course be understood that the device as a whole can be made plain or ornamental as desired, and the unsightliness of a long open slot, for a key, or pull-chain, is'obviated.

With these various, objects in view, my invention consists in the employment of an outer shell adapted to receive thelamp socket and a sleeve adapted to envelop the lower portion of said socket and secure the same in place by connecting the upper portion of the sleeve to the interior of the combined socket shell and holder, preferably through the medium of a screw joint.

The invention consists also of certain 'details of construction and novelties of combination all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.

In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ a sheet metal shell A, which may be of any desired size and ornamentation, the upper portion thereof being shaped to receive the ordinary incandescent lamp socket as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and in order to maintain this socket in its proper position in this shell A which is a combined socket shell and shade. holder I employ a sheet metal sleeve B which is of such size and shape as to envelop the lower endof the lamp socket, and at its upper end is provided with a thread B which is adapted to engage the threads A produced in the shell A as most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This sleeve B has a shoulder or collar l3 atthe lower end of the threads 13 which serves as a stop and prevents the sleeve being screwed too far upwardly into the shell A It will thus be seen that my combined socket shell and shade holder comprises only two elements, namely, the outer shell A and the inner sleeve B which thereby completely eliminates the use of the ordinary two-piece socket shell which ordinarily has been arranged within the shade holder and secured at the upper end thereof, or has been employed in connection with a shade holder attached thereto in which construction the weight of the shade or glass ware is carried entirely by the socket shell which frequently pulls apart and by the use of my combination device these dangers are avoided and a much cheaper and more eilicient device produced.

It will of course be understood that any construction of lamp socket can be employed and the device is adapted for use in connection with either a pull-chain or key-switch, but. completely avoids the necessity of the long unsightly side slot to receive said keyswitch.

In assembling the parts it is only necessary to insert the socket in the upper portion of the shell and screw the sleeve up until the shoulder 13 attaches the portion A and as this sleeve leads upwardly it carries the incandescent socket with it and seats it properly in the upper portion of the shell A. The shade or glass-warezcan be attached to the lower portion of the shell A either by the ordinary set screw or by the screw ring previously referred to as constituting a part of my previous patent.

It will thus be seen that I provide a cheap, simple and efiicient combination socket shell and shade holder capable of carrying out all of the objects hereinbefore referred to.

That I claim is 1. A combined socket shell and shade holder comprising a shell adapted to receive and envelop a socket within the same, and a sleeve detachably secured to the interior of said shell and adapted to retain the socket therein, said sleeve being also enveloped by the shell, as set forth.

2. A combined socket shell and shade holder comprising a shell adapted to receive and envelop a socket, a sleeve adapted to be secured within said shell, said sleeve and shell being provided with means for limiting the inward movemnt of the sleeve, said sleeve being also enveloped within the shell, as set forth. 7

3. A combined socket shell and shade holder comprising a shell adapted to receive and envelop a socket, the shell being adapted to support a shade at its lower end, said shell having a thread intermediate its ends, and asleeve adapted to be inserted within the shell for the purpose of retaining a socket therein, the upper end of said sleeve being threaded to engage the threaded portion of the shell, as set forth.

4:. A combined socket shell and shade holder comprising a 'shell adapted to receive and envelop a socket and support a shade at its lower end, said shell being threaded intermediate its ends, a sleeve threaded at its upper end and adapted to engage the threaded portion of the shell, said sleeve being arranged within the shell and enveloped thereby, and provided with a collar or shoulder adapted to limit the inward movement of said sleeve with reference to the shell.
