l/ly present invention relates to improvements in shade holders, such as those used for incandescent lamps, especially in out-ofdoors or other exposed locations.
An object of the invention is to provide an eflicient means for detachably securing a glass shade to the holder which will at the same time seat the flanged rim or bead surrounding the mouth of the shade against its seat in the holder. A further object is to provide an attaching means which will accomplish its object and at the same time constitute a yielding attachment which will avoid breaking the glass shade when it expands due to the heat of the contained lamp. Other objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description.
The invention accordingly consists of the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangements of parts as will be exemplified in the structure to be hereinafter described. The accompanying drawing serves to illustrate one preferred embodiment of the invention but without limiting the invention to all the details thereof except as same may be required by the appended claims in view of the prior art.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a longitudinal '2 mid-section through a shade holder and shade having attaching means within my invention shown partly in cross-section and partly in elevation; Fig. 2 is a partial view of the foregoing as looked at in the direction of the arrow designated 2 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is apartial view of Fig. 1 viewed in the direction of the arrow 3 in that figure.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is supposedly a metallic shade holder and 2 is a glass shade co-operating therewith. lVhile these have the shape shown in the drawing, this is purely for purposes of illustration since the invention is independent of shapes and sizes. It is also independent of the materials out of which the shade holder and shade are made except that ordinarily, because the shade 2 must be transparent or translucent, it will be madeof a glass-like or some other more 1931. or less fragile material. The shade holder will also ordinarily be made conveniently of cast or spun metal. It will be understood that when they parts are assembled, as in Fig. 1, they are supposeol'to house an incandescent lamp socket and lamp, the wires for which extend through a hole 3 in the top of the shade holder. However, for simplicity, the electrical fixture has been omitted.
The shade holder 1 at its mouth is provided with an outwardlyextending flange 4, and this flange is provided with a. rim 5 extending at right angles thereto at its outer periphery. The glass shade 2 is provided with an outwardly extending flanged rim or bead 6 at its mouth. This flanged mouth of the shade is receivable freely or loosely within the rim of the shade holder and can be seated againsta gasket 7 located between it and the flange 4: of the shade holder.
At preferably several places spaced about the periphery, I provide attaching means, each comprising a strip of springy material such as a strip of spring brass 8. This is located in the space between the inner periphery of the rim 5 of the holder and the edge of the flange 6 of the shade so that the length of the strip extends circumferentially about the inner periphery of the rim. One end of the strip is riveted or otherwise secured to the rim 5, its other end being free or nonattached to the rim. The width of the strip is considerably greater than the thickness'of the flange 6 so that the lower half of the strip extends below or beyond it. Ascrewl) engages a threaded opening in the rim 5 at the free end of the strip so that the end of the screw may be made to engage against the lower half or that portion of the strip which is below or beyond the flange of the shade. A look nut 10 engages the shank of the screw between the outside of the rim 5 and the screw-head.
Fig. 1 shows two of these attaching devices located 180 apart but obviously there may be three of them located 120 apart or a greater number if desired. To attach the shade, v the screws 9 will be screwed back to allow the spring strips 8 to lie adjacent the inner periphery of the rim, 5 and thereby permit 108 the flanged mouth of the shade to be inserted into the position shown in Fig. 1. The screws will then be adjusted inwardly into the positions shown in Fig. 1 with the result that the free portions of the spring strips will be forced inwardly yieldingly against the periphery of the flange 6 of the shade and at the same time the strips, especially towards their free end, will be twisted so as to force the flange of the shade yieldingly towards the flange of the shade holder; words, the spring strips have the combined action of forcing the shade yieldingly away from the rim 5 of the holder towards one another and against the flange 4 of the holder. In both respects, the pressure is a yielding one and allows for expansion and contraction of the shade due to temperature changes. Thus, the shade is not only supported or suspended from the holder, but is forced firmly against the gasket 7 and the flange 4 of the shade holder so as to make a suiflciently dustand water-proof joint between them for all practical purposes.
As changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, it is to be understood that the matter hereinbefore set forth is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is: V
1. A shade holder having at its month an outwardly extending flange provided with a transverse rim at its outer periphery; a glass shade having an outwardly extendlng flange at its mouth receivably loosely within the rim of the holder against the flange thereof; and means for attaching shade and holder togeth, er comprising a strip of suitable material extending lengthwise of the inner periphery of the rim of the holder in the space between said rim and the flange of the shade, said strip being attached at one end to said rim and being free at its other end, said strip being considerably wider than the thickness of the flange of the shade; and a screw operatively support-ed by the rim of the holder at the free end of the strip to bear against its portion which is below or beyond the flange of the shade.
2. The combination set forth in claim 1 further characterized by a gasket of yielding material located between the flanges of the shade and holder respectively.
3. The combination set forth in claim 1 further characterized by a lock-nut on the shank of the screw between its head and the outside of the rim of the holder.
