Specification of Letters Ietent.
Patented T/fiar. 11c, 1 .915.
Application filed Dctober 21, 1913. Serial No. 796,381.
To all whom it may concern:
Be t known that 1, WILLIAM F. ANKLAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to lamps particularly designed for use on motor vehicles, and it is the object to obtain a construction in which two lamps of different power are arranged within a common case without interference with each other. Thus a single lamp fulfils the purpose of the headlight and dash-lights.
It is usual in headlight construction to focus the rays by a parabolic reflector, which limits the angle of distribution and concentrates the light. It is necessary, however, that the filament of the lamp should be located at the proper point for focusing, and
it is equally important that there should be no obstruction between the lamp and the reflector; Thus, where two difierent lamps are placed in the same case both cannot be in focus, while the one out of focus will obstruct the rays from the one in focus. With my improved construction I have overcome this defect by placing the main, or high power lamp, 1n proper position of focus in relation to the parabolic reflector, while the auxiliary lamp. is placed in a niche in the reflector wall, the walls of the niche being formed to produce a second reflector for the auxiliary lamp.
As shown in the'drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical, central, longitudinal section through the lamp reflector, the outer casing being omitted; Fig. 2 is a. front elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 is a. section on line M Fi 1.
is the reflector for the main lamp which is of usual arabolic form.
B is an e ectriclamp placed in position for focus in relation to this reflector and supported in a cylindrical lamp socket G projecting from the rear of the reflector.
D is a niche formed in the upper wall of on to the socket it will contract its diameter w and clamp the lamp therein.
The construction described is one which is adapted to be used with any suitable construction of lamp case, the bulge in the reflector formed by the niche D heing ar ranged in the usual space provided between the reflector and the outer case, While this space also provides for the electrical connections to'the lamps. These connections are formed of flexible conductors as indicatedat J and K and are attached to a common plug socket L forengagement with the aperture in the outer case, not shown. Thus hoth lights may be controlled through a common multiple connector, andas b oth the lamps and their cdunections are mounted. upon the main reflectmr, the engagement with the case is facilitate? What I c aim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a main reflector and a lamp fo'cusable in relation thereto, of an auxiliary lamp arranged in a niche in said reflector.
2. A parabolic lamp reflector having a niche or depression in a portion of its wall forming an auxiliary reflector, an auxiliary lamp in said niche, and a main lamp focus able in relation to said parabolic reflector.
3. A detachable lamp reflector, main, and auxiliary. electric lam-p bulbs mounted on said reflector, electrical connections to' said lamps, and a common socket attached to said connections and removable with the refiector.
4. A detachable lamp reflector of general parabolic form and provided with a niche or depression at one point in its Wall, main and auxiliary lamps located respectively in, focusable relation to the main reflector and in the niche therein, tubular lamp sockets for said lamps projecting rearwardly from said'main reflector and niche, and a connector carried. by and detachable with Said. re-
flector, inclndinga common plug socket and branch connections therefrom to the respective lamps. VV VVV 5. A lamp reflector, having its li alls fashioned for the focusingof a main lamp, and having in one portion a niche or depression forming a reflector for an auxiliary lamp.
I6. A parabolic lamp reflector, having a niche in. a portion of its Wall forming an auxiliary lamp reflector.
7. A parabolic lamp reflector, .having a 1,131.,eaa
niche in a portion of its wall forming an auxiliary lamp reflector, and tubular sockets, projecting respectively rearward from themain and auxiliary reflectors.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
