ELECTRIC FIXTURE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,593, dated July 23, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN CHARLES HOL- LINGS, of Boston, county of Suitolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an.lmprovement in Electric Fixtures, of which the followin g (lGSOIlPtlOILlIl connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representinglike parts.

Electric fixtures are now commonly attached to a gas-pipe or other object projecting from the ceiling of a room by means of a suitable insulated coupling which is inclosed in a shell This shell or case has commonly been made in one piece and adapted to slide on the stem of the fixture, and frequently much ditficulty is experienced in putting up and in attempting to repair the coupling of the fixture, owing to the fact that the shell or case cannot be moved on the fixture sufiiciently to gain access to the coupling; also, prior to my invention, a shell or case has been divided and the separate parts thereof have been held in place by a collar or sleeve surrounding the lower end of the pieces of the case.

This invention has for its object to construct a shell or case adapted to inclose the coupling of an electric or other fixture, so that the said shell or case can readily be applied and removed from the fixture at will after the same has been put up, thus making the coupling readily accessible.

In accordance with this invention the shell or case is made in sections, (it being herein shown as made in two parts or halves,) which are secured together to a divided clampingcollar of insulating material or wood, the sections of the shell or case being provided with a suitable locking or retaining device, by which the parts may be held closed together, and the clamping-collar be made to grasp the gas-pipe or the insulating-joint, as will be described.

Figure 1 shows in top view the shell or case embodying this invention, the parts thereof being shown in dotted line as separated; Fig. 2, a vertical section taken on the dotted line w 00 of the shell or case shown in Fig. 1, the shell or case inclosing a coupling of an electric fixture, (shown in elevation and Fig. 3, a side View of the shell or case shown in Fig. 1,

it being broken away at one side to show the looking or retaining device.

The shell or case is preferably made of thin sheet metal, and is herein shown as composed of two parts a l), forming a. frusto conical hollow body. The two parts a b are secured by suitable nails or screws 2 to a two-part clamping-collar d c, of wood or other suitable insulating material, the parts a b at one edge being represented as united by a hinge-joint, as c, it constituting one form of looking or retaining devices. The clamping-collar has a small central hole, as f, through it to receive the gas-pipe g or other object projecting from a Wall or ceiling.

The stem h of the fixture is attached to the projection g by the insulated coupling '5, of usual construction, and it will be seen that the two-part shell or case may be separated, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1, to be applied to the pipe g to cover the coupling or be removed therefrom.

The parts a b, when brought together, as shown by full lines, Fig. 1, to embrace the pipe g,wil l be held together to inclose the coupling 2' by means of a looking or retaining device, as 3.

The looking or retaining device 3 is herein shown as a spring (see Fig. 3) attached to one of the parts, as c, of the clamping-collar, the end of the spring bearing frictionally on or against the part d, said spring serving to lock or retain the parts of the shell or case closed; yet any other form of locking or retaining devices may be employed.

A shell or case of the kind herein shown may be readily applied to a fixture after it has been put up and be readily removed therefrom for repairs or to gain access to the coupling.

I claim 1. The hinged divided shell or case, combined with the divided clamping-collar connected to said shell and provided with a central opening, and a looking or retaining device to hold the parts together, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with the pipe g, of a two-part hinged shell or case and a clamping,- collar of insulating material secured thereto, and means, substantially as set forth, to lock or retain the parts upon the said pipe, substantially as described.

3. The divided shell or case hinged, as at a, combined with the two-part clampingeollar- (Z c, having a central opening f, and a locking or retaining device, as 3, to hold the parts together, substantially as described.

4. The combination, with a fixture and its inclosed coupling, of a hinged sectional shell 10 or case having an inclosed clamping-collar of insulating material rigidly secured thereto and adapted to embrace the pipe and incloso the coupling, substantially as described.
